A federal class action claims Roku and TCL are pushing software updates that brick smart TVs. Lead plaintiff Terri Else filed the case in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. She wants to represent every U.S. buyer of an affected Roku-powered TV, with a separate California subclass for anyone who bought…

Could it be the case that this problem only affects TCL sets that run off Roku TV O/S? I have a QM7 set that runs perfect, with or without my android tv box. As an abundance of caution, I just make sure I scrutinize every update from TCL before downloading it, along with deactivating auto updating and the TV’s Wi-Fi unless I want to do an update.

Yea it seems to be related to TCL TVs running Roku OS

I let my TCL update Friday and got Shield Guard installed. Better make sure you disable it. If you have playlist on it it and you let the memory get to a certain point it will take over. You will have to let it clear things up and it don’t do cache it does data on all your apps. You end up redoing all favorites lists .

Thanks for the tip. I have 2 friends with TCL Roku TVs that have had these problems when using their android boxes.

The lawyers will make 20 million bucks. Everybody that bought a TCL and registered the warranty card will get a 20% off coupon for their next purchase…

As long as it’s not a Roku TV O/S, your TCL tv will be ok. My QM7 works great with my AM9. No problems.

Roku isn’t the only supplier to push an update that bricks their customers’ devices. ONN pushed Android 14 which completely bricked on of our 4ks and made it necessary to do a hard factory reset on another. I’d be completely pissed if, instead of a $20 device being rendered useless, it was a TV that no longer operated.

This is the first time I’ve heard of Onn bricking their 4K devices with updates? Amazon was caught in a similar lawsuit recently - Amazon Faces Lawsuit Over Firestick Slowdowns
