One of my Sony TV sets doesn’t have Dolby Vision. When movie torrents are found by Real Debrid, if I click on any link with DV in the description, I get audio ONLY. The display is black. Are others experiencing the same problem? This reminds me of about a year ago when Kodi was messing up HEVC file displayed colors. That was a different file format they needed to find a way to resolve. I am suspecting there is no way so far for them to adjust a dolby vision encoding to convert it to what the TV display can handle. Another project for our friends at Kodi to address, then each of the providers can modify as needed.
Use the FEN addon in Kodi and dig deep into the settings. There is an option to filter out Dolby Vision links.
Don’t expect Kodi to add support for Dolby Vision as it is proprietary. Pretty much all movies that are available in DV are also available in HDR. This doesn’t sound like a problem for you if your TV doesn’t support it anyway. But just in case you’re curious, there is a modified version of Kodi by Maven on repo.kodinerds.net that does support Dolby Vision. That’s what I use.
Thanks Jay. My query was more focused upon why a DV link doesn’t display default to sdr. A blank screen with audio only is a pain since you can’t see the stop button. I am wondering if it is bit rate related? Perhaps the various builds could add a playback setting to play DV as sdr?
HDR can be hit/miss on some tvs. My older Sony bravia hdr set tends to have too dark a display, it’s as if the hdr processing was not handled properly with the 850e model. Who knows? Sony would never admit a problem.
The streams are completely separate I think. You wouldn’t have two video tracks within the same source like you would with different audio tracks. So you have to specifically choose a stream that is labeled as HDR or SDR.
Again, the biggest problem is identifying which ones are which so you don’t accidentally play a DV file. FEN is one of those addons that will properly identify them and you can filter them out. But if you are using a different addon, try to pick a stream that says HDR because then you know it isn’t DV. It can’t be both.
Another thing about the black screen, if you watch the Kodi Start2Finish video that I did, I went over how install and use keymap editor. You can change your button settings during video playback so that hitting the back button will stop the video instead of going to the menu and keeping the video playing in the background. This would get rid of your black screen and bring you back to the list of streams available.
