Over 2,200 IPTV subscribers have been fined in a major move to clamp down on illegal streaming in Italy. Unlike past efforts that mainly targeted service operators, this wave goes after individual subscribers of IPTV providers. Initial penalties start at €154 and can reach €5,000 for those caught again. The action follows a new protocol…
So does this stay in Italy, or do they go across the country if the users are not in or from Italy?
It’s possible because of international treaties and agreements that ensure reciprocal copyright protection due to the Berne Convention and National Treatment.
It’s a bit presumptuous that it’s people watching only Serie A games… if I lived in Italy I’d be watching F1 and IndyCar.. but would be caught up in the football sweep.
They probably just quoted football, because it’s the most popular sport in the world and probably pirated more than any other sport.
Sucks to be them. But like the article says, “If a service offers thousands of channels, live sports, and pay-per-view for a small fee, that’s usually a warning sign.” Yet there are thousands, if not millions of people in the US who insist their bargain basement price streaming service is “legal” when nothing could be further from the truth. Maybe they’ll get lucky and crackdowns like that won’t hit this country.
