This ATSC3/DRM crap is just going to encourage piracy. When are these clowns going to realize they’re shooting themselves in the foot!
I couldn’t be angrier at the Broadcasters & Feds. Buying the HD Homerun Flex 4K ATSC 3.0 in anticipation of all the features and winding up with a DRM hamstrung black box that does little more than my old one does. CES and Silicon Dust this year has promises for the future, but I purchased this in 2021! Frustrating.![]()

We will no longer be able to use Tablo or HD Homerun . Plus as a long time tin foil hatter I don’t want two way communication which sends my info to the broadcasters .
Agree, which will be a killer for me (I actually like my local network broadcast channels). But I could live with the national ones from an illegal IPTV app!
Never…. and that’s the problem.
And speaking of ATSC 3.0 check out this video from Lon Seidman. His brand new ATSC 3.0 box gets bricked.
Same dude who sez the New Buzz P6 boxes are no good. Go figure…
Well he isn’t about illegal streaming so I could see why he wouldn’t be a fan of Buzz boxes.
When it comes to free over the air tv he makes a lot of sense. The NAB is a greedy lot.
I’m genuinely confused by the comments section. Help me understand what the frustration is. I have not heard anything about devices being “bricked" solely due to ATSC 3.0 broadcasts. Or are you just upset that your current device you paid a lot of money for is not compatible with ATSC 3.0? There is currently law in effect that that all local stations have to continue broadcasting ATSC 1.0 until July 2027, even if they simultaneously broadcast ATSC 3.0 NextGen signals. There is no termination date for ATSC 1.0 broadcasts yet. They could continue doing simultaneous broadcasting for years to come. By the time it shuts off, you may have already bought a new TV with the new tuner in it.
I like ATSC 3.0 so far. I have a newer TV with the tuner built in. When connected to the internet, I can access on demand content from the channels (such as news clips and programs). There is also a start over option for some programs during the times they are broadcast in case you missed the beginning. But most of all, I like the digital TV guide that looks just like a normal cable guide with advanced features.
As far as recording stuff and keeping it forever, that’s difficult no matter what. They will always find new ways to try to prevent that. That’s the risk to take when buying expensive devices. But if you have Kodi or Stremio or something with a Debrid account then you should be able to find almost all movies and shows. It’s really sporting events and the news that you’d want to record. Recording IPTV isn’t the most reliable but it is an option. This is probably your only option for recording sports if you aren’t able to record from antenna. But the news you should be able to access on demand for a period of time.
Well, yes, there is - July 2027 - 18 months from now. We all know what will happen - Broadcasters will stop ATSC1, people will be forced to figure out how to get ATSC3 or (more likely) pay cable companies to get local TV stations.
I’m not sure I agree with that. Advertising brings in a lot of money for local stations. Local TV stations don’t make any money off of people buying new TV sets. They do make money off of commercials. More viewers = more revenue generated from commercials. The government would have to mandate a shutdown of ATSC 1.0 and I don’t see the motivation for doing that.
The also make a boatload of money off Cable “Broadcast Surcharge” fees (probably more than their advertising revenue).
Right…which is going to be entirely live TV streaming apps once traditional cable dies. But those who can’t afford those apps and still rely on antenna TV aren’t going to go out and buy a new TV tuner if they force ATSC 3.0. Even if they did, that money goes to the TV manufacturer, not the local station. So, I still don’t see the argument for shutting down ATSC 1.0
Ever hear of money? How about DRM (digital rights management) If you don’t think the NAB want to get rid of ATSC 1.0 you are being naive. The NAB are powerful lobbyists in DC, and they want full control over what the viewer can watch even though it’s free over the air tv. If it were cable or pay tv I could see it, but not for free tv.
As for advertising they claim they are losing millions of dollars of advertising revenue, hence the argument for more money for sat and cable customers to simply view their local channels.
The NAB are a bunch of greedy crooks imo. But what do I know lol
Ever hear of being polite?
I asked ChatGPT and got a much more detailed response. I didn’t realize that ATSC 3.0 would push paid content just like home screens of streaming devices. Plus more advertisements on menu screens. But I’m not sure they can interrupt live programs to push ads like streaming subscriptions with advertisements or like YouTube does during long videos. That’s more of the breakdown I was looking for. Not a blunt response with acronyms I didn’t know.
I wasn’t being unpolite. But next time just ask chatgpt since you seem to prefer those responses ![]()
The article said they are hoping to update boxes with no new hardware?
Stay hopeful!
All of the Local broadcasters in Buffalo are already broadcasting ASTC3 102.1, 104.1 and 107.1, I am also waiting for Silicone dust to update all the boxes, but the ASTC 1 channels are still working great.
Cheers
