Ota, antennas and other cable solutions

This is a great app to have while mounting your antenna. Really helps to dial in the direction, not just guess and possibly cost yourself channels or reception.

Some friends and I were having a “discussion” about which was the best way to watch the super bowl that is coming up on a projector broadcast on a big big wall. Easiest and cheapest way is to just plug an onn box into the HDMI of the projector and blast sportsfire or KODI. Still there is buffering issues. With an OTA antenna broadcast from the local channel… there is no buffering… how do i hook an OTA to an HDMI? then i said… hold the phone… there is an entire Troypoint thread about OTA antena… So… my Troypoint friends… someone educate me on how to do this…

I have an HD Homerun Flex that I access through my streaming devices and the HD Homerun app. Not sure if you have a setup like this for your OTA, but if you did, you would keep the Onn connected to the projector and just access the app (Plex, HD Homerun. Etc) that you typically use for the OTA channels.

Tablo also sells a device that is similar to the Homerun.

You’ll need a device that runs the Tablo app (Onn works), an internet connection and either WiFi or Ethernet connection to your router.

There’s also a “ZJBox” sold by Amazon for $30 that converts antenna signals into HDMI. I cannot vouch for how well it works, but Amazon has a great return policy if the device sucks.

Well, the device must have a coaxial input - a TV, an OTA box (Recast, Tablo, HDhomerun) or an AV receiver with a digital TV tuner.

We were in the path of Helene here,no power for 9 days, and no internet for 18 days. The only way I could watch the news or anything else was via our ota antenna. Many in our area had no ota and got by by using their car radios for information. Helene literally sent us back to the stone ages as far as communication. So if you live in an area that you can get reception I highly recommend getting an ota antenna. Get an inverter and a small battery if you can’t use a generator for power.

After my last hurricane/power outage I purchased a solix f2600 batery backup and use it as a ups for my pc’s, router/modem. In the event of an outage it can run pretty much everything essiential and I can hook up solar panels … peace of mind. Prayers for those out their in the wake of those storms.

For power outages, during hurricanes etc, I have this:
Pad TV Tuner $29 on Amazon
I have a Fire 10 tablet, 2 power packs I keep fully charged for storm season,
and the Pad TV tuner.
The Pad TV tuner plugs into the usb charging port on the tablet.
My attic rabbit ears plug into the tuner with an adapter which comes with the tuner.
The tuner comes with a small antenna but I use my attic rabbit ears.
I’m not positive on this, so in case get this adapter also, see below.
Bingo, If my local station(s) are up and running I’m good.
My attic antenna can catch a station 42 miles away in case my locals are down.

Get a bigger bedroom.

I would very much like to emulate what Flt505 has done for power outages with their Pad TV Tuner from Amazon… BUT I want to use my iPhone or iPad.
Anybody have ideas about how to do this?

This is probably the dumbest question but…It’s hard for me to get line of sight because of all the trees. I do have an old DirecTV dish at the corner of the yard. Is there some way I could redneck that into an antenna?

ahem…No question is dumb, but Us “Southern Engineers” resent your derisive labeling more commonly referred to as “pre-sunscreen era farmers” by the edumacated types. Oh…and dont forget the bailin’ wire and duct tape! Zip ties are for those uppity folks! And Here is ONE answer for that which you seek! A tad of research goes a long way nowadays I tell ya!

As far as using the satellite dish goes, a qualified no. Theoretically, an antenna could be fashioned to be placed at the focal point of the dish, but that would make for an extremely directional device.

You can, however, use that installed coax cable for an antenna so you may already have a good path to your TV.

Well as a 54 year citizen of Arkansas, I meant no harm sir…
