I’ve noticed an issue with my new ONN streaming device. Watching Troy’s videos, he appears to be able to move the cursor smoothly to select an item using Downloader or JioPages. With both apps on my device, if I press any of the arrow keys, the cursor jumps from one end of the screen to the other. For example, if the cursor is in the middle and I press the UP key, the cursor jumps to the very top of the screen. A press of the DOWN key and the cursor goes to the extreme bottom.
Any idea how to make this operate properly? I realize that Mouse Toggle may overcome this problem, however in Troy’s videos, he didn’t have Mouse Toggle installed when he first installed and used Downloader.
Thanks
Hello Bob, try rebooting your device. You don’t need mouse toggle for using the Downloader app. I’m not getting any lag whatsoever with my mouse pointer in Downloader app.
@TROYPOINT Thanks for the reply. I have tried rebooting several times, it’s always the same. Anywhere where I need fine cursor control (primarily a browser), the cursor just jumps from one edge of the screen to the other. Do you think it’s worthwhile to try restoring to factory and starting over? As luck would have it, I didn’t notice the problem until everything was installed.
I had a similar issue when using the remote to type. During an instance when I was typing in a url for an app install, my cursor would move from one side of the screen keyboard to the other depending on what direction of the d-pad I was pressing.
As I was counter tapping to fight this problem, it eventually went improved and after backing out of the keyboard and bringing it back up a few times, the issue resolved.
I have to do longer operational runs to see if this is a persistent problem, as I haven’t used it much after setup and initial testing sessions.
I didn’t have to reboot or rest, though I considered it if it didn’t resolve. Also consider the idea of reset and re-pairing of your BT remote.
One can only cross their fingers. Good luck on yours.
Does your cursor drift in each pressed direction when navigating on your Google TV home screen or secondary screens? Or is it just in certain apps, like Downloader or Jiopages?
UPDATE. I found the problem. In Troy’s video he recommends changing the Window animation scale, Transition animation scale, and Animator duration scale all from 1x to .5x. I had changed all 3 to OFF, figuring that would be even faster. Apparently, doing that makes the cursor jump from one end of the screen to the other when any of the direction arrows is pressed in a browsr. Changing all 3 to Troy’s recommendation solved the problem. Now I can move the cursor to different locations in a browser. Thanks for all the replies.
I have had the same problem. I also noticed the microphone button was intermittent. I think the problem is in the remote, Going to return it for new one.
I tried to setup mouse toggle for android on my 4K Onn box. No problem installing but when you press the mute button for 2 seconds to activate it the screen goes black. I installed as per your video for Chromecast.
Hello, this is not working well with the new Onn Box. Something with Android 12 that prevents it from working properly. Waiting for an update from the dev. Once it’s available I will add to the toolbox.
We have a message for this on the Toolbox. You may have missed it.
Kudos for figuring it out. Funny how we can think if it’s faster on 0.5 it’ll be faster at 0.0! Unintended consequences when we outsmart ourselves lol. But you probably did some streamers a favor by uncovering this.
PROBLEM SOLVED If you’re like me then you immediately dove into dev options scaling all (three) animation options down to zero. Force of habit from trying to decrease lag on android. But with android TV it will cause the mouse to only show up in 4 corners of the screen rendering the mouse unusable. If you’ll set all the animations to scale 1.5 your mouse will work like a charm!
Here is an excellent article to better understand Animation scale, and it’s brief.
Key Points to Remember
Perceived vs. Real Speed: Tweaking animation scales boosts perceived speed, not actual device performance. Sometimes you will still need to wait after the animation, but other times you may actually be able to resume slightly faster, if the animation at 1x was masking a surface that was otherwise ready for interaction
Disabling Animations: Setting scales to 0 removes animations, but this can harm the user experience. Material design animations convey information; eliminating them might make interactions less intuitive. I found 0.5 to be the sweet spot.
App Behavior: Some apps with custom animations might not align well with altered scales. If you find that bothering, consider setting only the animator duration scale back to 1.
You may not be able to go back: Unmodified devices will feel noticably slower and more sluggish.
