I’m having the same problem and quite frankly, am having trouble understanding how to get around the captive portal thing. I’ve tried what’s written in previous post her to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
What did it do when you tried to open Google from the Downloader browser?
Net::ERr_INTERNET_DISCONNECTED
Never heard of the date and time trick. I’ll have to test that out sometime. But if the captive portal still doesn’t open after doing that you can try to manually force it by typing in the really long URL address. BEFORE connecting your cell phone to the wifi open your web browser and the splash page should come up. If you already connected your phone then you’ll have to clear your cache and whatever so your browser will once again show you the splash page. See if you can copy the web address and paste it into a text message or a note app so you can easily see the whole thing. Then on your streaming device open a browser and type it all in to see if it will open the portal.
Another easier method is to buy a cheap travel router. You can Google how to set them up. Basically the router will connect to the hotel WiFi and you login with the captive portal. After that the router shares the connection with your other devices but the hotel still only sees the router itself as the connected device.
My cell phone connects automatically as it’s a saved network. I’ll try to remove it and log in manually when I return to my room this afternoon. If that fails, I may try the router route. Thanks for your help.
Tried your suggestions but I’ve had no success. I guess I out of luck for now. I’ve considered doing a factory reset, but hate to risk clearing everything, reinstalling then have the same problem.
Nah, you don’t want to do that. You can always use your phone as a hotspot if you have unlimited data. Or even if you do have a hotspot limit just keep your streaming low. Choose 720p streams with small file sizes.
If you get desperate, the fire sticks are supposed to have the captive portal capabilities built in now if you open the silk browser to connect. Could just buy one of those to use while you’re at the hotel.
Thanks for all the help. I asked the front desk and they gave me a tech support number and the guy walked me thru it and I am happy to say and watching it now. Thanks for everyone’s help in this matter. Y’all have a great day/night!!
Glad you got it resolved, but would you mind sharing with the rest of us what the solution was? That’s why we’re all here.
I called tech support of the provider, asked me for my Mac address and I guess opened the captive portal for a designated period of my stay. It’s been working since.
Ah, just bypassed it. Makes sense. Not sure that all hotels would do that. Kudos to them.
Indeed kudos, I spend a lot of time in hotels and am appreciative of things to make my stay pleasant.
Just got back from a motel stay in Texas with a captive portal. I assume we are talking about the same thing. Using an ONN box I can “log on” but then it leads me to the captive portal screen and no manipulating of the remote will get you to or activate the “buttons”. I downloaded a pointer from the TP Toolbox which allowed me to navigate to the password box and the “connect” box, but it wouldn’t activate them.
The answer, which I read here or elsewhere (I was desperately searching for a resolution), led me to consider asking the front desk for the provider’s phone number. But they could barely give me directions to my room, so I ditched that solution as not practical. Finally, I read that Jiopages would give you a pointer and allow you to navigate the password portal page, put in the motel password, and connect. So being a tech challenged person, I wondered how you would download Jiopages on the ONN box if you didn’t have a connection to the hotel internet? But it downloaded. The poster that said to use Jiopages didn’t give me the steps to use it so I was kind of stuck. Finally, I remembered there was an IP address associated with the motel internet portal. So took a photo of that and entered the IP address in the Jiopages browser. BINGO. It went to the portal sign up page and I was able to put in the password, check the “accept” box, and “connect”. Almost couldn’t believe it. But that is the solution.
Finding and installing the TV friendly silk browser would be less frustrating to use than Jio.
If my memory hasn’t completely failed me, others tried Silk and other browsers to no avail. I’ll only use Jio for this purpose only.
Just dealt with this issue and the date and time trick definitely works. Thanks Sickfreak.
I spent about 30-45 minutes trying to figure out the issue and sure enough the answer is on the insider page.
Outstanding! I’m very glad to be of help.
I’ll be traveling back from the holidays in a few days and will be making a pitstop at a Marriott property - I have my Onn with me - I’ll be eager to testing out your trick.
Hey I’d be looking forward to seeing how you make out and if you could give us exact details and instructions I’m very curious I use to work at a Marriott as property manager so we were doing this sort of stuff where you had to do the login for the internet but I never remember it being this difficult and mind you that was six or seven years ago so who knows what it’s like now so yeah if you could do it I’d really like to see your opinion and your experience.
I’ll make sure I report in, after the turn of the year, as I’ll be traveling through this weekend.
