Many of us on here use IPTV and may experience FOMO (fear of missing out) if you subscribe to a service that doesn’t provide 4K streams for live events. However, fret not, because the Olympics are not actually being filmed in 4K. NBC is just upscaling a 1080p feed before rebroadcasting. Granted their upscaling technology is probably better than anything an end user has, but I still wouldn’t worry too much about trying to find a 4K stream.
Interesting article on the challenges we’ll face trying to watch the Olympics.
As long as I get a clear picture and I can watch the sports I like, I have no problem with it NOT being in 4K
I agree @Remy . The shield should upscale so I think I’ll enjoy the show. Looking forward to it.
Will the sheild upscale the upscale by the network?
I already posted on this. Merge posts?
Thats what i was referring to.
Much better title too. Lol
Sorry I missed that @Jayhawks659 doing it now. Thanks for telling me.
This begs the question. Why are they already selling/pushing 8k tvs and boxes when clearly 4k is not ready for prime time.
There are some available but I don’t think anyone is “pushing” 8K right now. It’s human nature to push the limits. We will because we can. When 4K came out initially it was only good for upscaling content and video gaming. Took a long time for movies to all be released in UHD Blu-ray, and even longer for them to be available via streaming. Now every new movie is released in 4K. It’s the live TV that has yet to catch up.
Live TV will continue to offer lower quality feeds for those who haven’t yet upgraded to 4K televisions. But eventually, the switch will happen. For now, streaming TV services will increasingly offer channels in 4K both for native content and for already upscaled streams. As cable companies struggle to compete, they will eventually die out. I think the 3 options left will be streaming, OTA, or satellite. That is until Starlink grows to the point that they pair up with a streaming service and offer TV channels to finally put DirecTV and Dish out of business. With DirecTV losing NFL Sunday Ticket, their slow death has already begun.
When all the above happens, it will still be a long time before any native 8K content comes out. Again, it will be upscaling and gaming leading the way. And no one is going to buy an 8K TV unless it’s the same price or similar to a 4K TV. I think 4K is high enough quality that the average consumer is not going to care about 8K. I don’t ever see 8K TV channels being broadcast unless networks can eventually do it at the same cost as 4K. Obviously, that requires camera and equipment upgrades. Which is why the Olympics aren’t being filmed in 4K but upscaled instead.
I stand by my statement.4k isn’t ready for prime time, heck ota barely does 720p.ATSC 3.0 has been pushed back, which they tout will be able to do 4k.And I see plenty of 8k devices with a simple google search. They are putting the cart before the horse.
And unless starlink seriously lowers their prices not so many folks are gonna be signing up for that.Sat and cable are definitely on the decline,no question, but they ain’t dead yet.Where I live there are plenty of places that have no other choice for tv other than a sat dish.
I am getting more and more 4K vod sources and on my Samsung system with the Shield Pro I always select them. Even better if they’re re HDR 10+. OMG the picture is just amazing. With my ISP I get 150Mbps down and never get any buffering in Stremio with Torrentio RD. I suspect IPTV will take a bit to catch up.
