NVIDIA SHIELD Alternative? 128GB Storage - 8GB RAM - Gigabit - BT Remote

Here’s my first impressions video for the Ugoos SK1 Android TV Box.

Important: This is running Android, not Android TV! Some like the extra options and full access to Google Play on these devices whereas others don’t. This is completely personal preference. Please watch the entire video prior to making a decision on whether you want to buy this or not and even better, wait for my full review next week. This system is probably overkill for most of you!!

Note: Prices are always changing on AliExpress. Below is the link from where I ordered my SK1.

Why do you not recommend it for the Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc? Can’t we d/l them from the Playstore?

Hello, it isn’t Netflix certified. Yeah, you can probably find an app to sideload but it won’t work very well and it won’t provide HD resolution.

Ok, thanks!

Thanks for the great overview, Troy. Definitely looks like a great FS 4K Max alternative. Would really appreciate an update on how well it actually streams 4K content from Kodi. My experiences with both the Shield and Onn Pro boxes were poor when trying to stream 4K content (constant buffering, freezing and jitter even with 400MBPS download speed) , so I returned them both and got the FS 4K Max which operated flawlessly in that regard. But I certainly would still love to cut the FS cord, as soon as I can find a box which provides flawless 4K playback. Sadly, the advertised price for Ugoos SK1 on the AliExpress link you provided has now unfortunately increased to $205.50. That’s a very steep price to pay unless I’m sure it will perform perfectly in the areas I am most concerned about. Look forward to your more comprehensive review soon.

Okay, I’ve had this SK1 for about 5 months now. Comparing this to my other devices which are Formuler Z11 Pro Max, Buzz X5 128AX Special Edition and Firecube is pretty easy to do. Remember as Troy stated this is personal opinion. The others don’t come close to the SK1. The crazy amount of settings on this thing is insane :flushed: literally! The display settings, picture settings alone will have you mesmerized for weeks. Then onto the sound settings, a whole new journey. If you’re someone who is in to learning new things and toying around, you will absolutely love this box. Very good looking and as Troy mentioned sturdy and heavy compared to others. All the apps I use work perfectly on this. From launchers to device settings, so much choice.
The one con with this box and it seems others have had the same issue but not everyone and up to now there has not been any updates that have fixed it.
It doesn’t like to be paused more than about 8 minutes and then it will freeze up or playback really choppy so you have to hit the go back button and restart the stream and then it’s fine. It’s a bummer and hope they eventually fix it but too many good things to be a deal breaker for me.
I like this crazy thing so much, I have thought of getting another one so I’m never left without one.

Was it easy to get the remote to control your TV? On/off, and volume?

I hit the red button on the ur02 remote and the SK1, TV and Receiver all power on and I hit the same red button and all 3 things power off. :+1:
The volume controls on the ur02 controls the receiver.
And, yes it was easy if I did it, but it’s a while back now.

Nvidia Shield Pro is priced less than this.
How is it better?

More RAM and more Storage. As soon as I get mine tamed next week, I’ll know more. Troy says it’s a lot snappier.

Just curious. Is the buzztv powerstation 6 with the monster specs that arrived and was pulled last year, still dead as a doornail?

I hear that some have one, but I can’t confirm it’s functionalities.

I really like the specs. I am very happy with my z11 pro max, but my curiosity is getting the best of me. I love to tinker around with these boxes. Yeah, I talked myself into buying one. Hope I don’t get in trouble

Ok, Thanks for sharing the difference.

Will this box run the spectrum tv app? I’m guessing it will since Troy said the Google play store is the one you get with your phones and tablets.

Troy, I’m confused, as to why apps like Amazon Prime and others, won’t work on this box. If, it’s running the same android as my phone and tablet, seems like they should work. Those apps work great on my phone and tablet. I’m not as tech savvy, as most. But, I try to stay up with the constantly changing tech. With me being 67, I’m not doing too bad. Thanks of course to troypoint. Hopefully you can answer this with your next update. Thank you for all you do for all of us!

Not sure, not familiar with that app.

I don’t use Netflix but I can assure you Prime works great. I think maybe lower resolution but the SK1 and the TV I have both come with upscaling so there’s not much difference. :+1:
Plus my Samsung gets both Prime and Netflix with the full resolution so it doesn’t matter in my situation :upside_down_face:
