Newbie app questions

Hello everyone. I recently switched from FS to ONN 4K Plus. I very much enjoy Film Plus as it seems to find more of the shows my wife and I like to watch but I can’t help but wonder if there are better options. We are in the US and like to watch cooking competitions like Beat Bobby Flay, Guy’s Grocery Games etc. For some reason these cooking shows are hard to find on a lot of the apps I have tried. We also like to watch current movies and some current TV shows like The Rookie, Ghosts, Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage, Animal Control etc. I see a lot of posts about Kodi but the information is overwhelming. What version of Kodi?, What is a “Fork”?, do I need ADDON’s? Yikes. Can someone direct me to a basic Kodi setup (If there is such a thing) that would work for me or recommend other apps that can give me a user-friendly interface that have the shows I mentioned? I don’t mind paying for something that works well. Right now I’m also using EagleCast TV and it’s very good but can’t get the cooking shows or some of the TV shows we like.

You’re on the right track. First become a Patron. Go to troypoint.com and use the magnifying glass to search. You’ll find loads of Kodi tutorials.
If you’re new to this, Stremio is way easier than Kodi. Use the search feature. Ask questions but FIRST try on your own, we’ll help answer your questions but the Troypoint site does a good job of spoon feeding newbies and experts alike.
Stream On!

Thanks. I already became a Patron. I did try Stremio. I followed the instruction video I found here and downloaded the build the video recommended but I haven’t had much luck. I don’t quite understand the interface. I followed the instructions and when I search for shows and movies it lists a bunch of options to watch (Torrents maybe?) at the bottom of the screen but the details of each option are Greek to me, and it’s really hit and miss what plays well and what plays at all and I get a lot of pop up ads.

I never get any ads in Stremio and been using it for many years. Follow Troys video instruction and adding the add-ons. As far as what plays best that depends a great deal on your device that you are using. But don’t stress after a time you’ll start to understand more and more. Just have to search and read. You may benefit from the bootstrapper as a beginner.

We have articles out the wazoo for things like Kodi, Stremio, Syncler etc. These are all fantastic, but sometimes simpler could be as good if you aren’t looking for everything ever made. Something like Pluto TV is free, a nice interface and no hassle. I believe it has VOD cooking shows too, even though I don’t watch them lol. Might at least be worth a peek.

Pluto TV Review: Over 250 Free Live Channels & VOD

And don’t forget Plex Live TV. Easy app install and expanding it’s FAST every week.

Welcome! A simple KODI setup would be just one Addon. I would recommend the Umbrella addon with a Debrid service. . Search here there are detailed instructions on how to install. You can get the latest version of KODI 21.3 in the Troypoint Toolbox. Yeah it will take a bit more effort on your part. Been using KODI for about a decade so it’s easy for me. I am only recommending it because I watch a lot of the cooking shows/competitions as well and I can always find em on KODI

@MikeB65 , why not try some of the IPTV options out there, many offer a free trial,….I just searched my 2 services (which are way less $$ than eagle cast) an they both had all the shows you listed….and IPTV is definitely easy to grasp …just saying….

@MikeB65 and others: Reading Mike’s OP carefully, it looks like he’s needing two things, something for live TV and something for movies and TV shows on demand.

Mike, IMO and experience helping a couple of my friends, installing Kodi with the POV add-on is somewhat less confusing than installing Stremio because you don’t have to establish an account with Kodi. In both cases you’ll need a debrid service, which is a little confusing for a newbie.

For live TV, you can use Streamfire, which installs easily (search for Norofire on this forum) while you shop for an IPTV service.

Unfortunately, streaming using either legit or unverified apps isn’t really plug and play. Going the Kodi, Stremio, and cheap IPTV route would mean that you’re going to have a learning curve.

I feel like his main point wasn’t fully addressed (cooking shows), but the main detail was that he was mostly a beginner and I am assuming looking for something turnkey and simple. So many times in here we jump to Kodi and Stremio because we all use it so successfully, but it definitely isn’t the easiest thing for a novice cordcutter. And that isn’t a negative towards anyone in here, Kodi just takes some time to get used to, even with Troy’s great instruction. Film+ was an app he liked, fairly similar to Cinema. He could also look at Flixvision, a great apk that can integrate with RD or equivalent. How to Install Flix Vision on Google TV/Android/Fire TV (V3.6.1r)

I suggested KODI because the Cooking shows are all there. OP specifically said a lot of times he can’t find the cooking shows on these apps. A llot of the crappy APK’s and Apps don’t possess the content that KODI and Stremio have. But I do understand why people like to use the crappy apps. Because they are easy.

Well, none of the suggestions are wrong, it is totally what works best for the OP. We also missed a couple questions after I reread. A Kodi “fork” is an edited version of Kodi that Troy puts into his Toolbox. This can allow you to use multiple instances of Kodi on your box, where the main program wouldn’t let you do that. Also, there really isn’t a basic setup for Kodi, you would need an add-on or a build. If you were wanting to try, the Umbrella add-on is great. How to Install Umbrella Kodi Addon (Latest Version)

Or a build that has many add-ons that are pre-setup for you. Just add RD.

He was looking for more than cooking shows. He is wanting some of the newer broadcast network shows also.
It seems to me that implies live TV and/or VOD along with something to replace Films Plus.

Mike has Eaglecast…I’d be shocked if Eaglecast doesn’t have the Food Network and the Cooking Channel along with the network shows he wants.

For cooking shows, look under “Free TV” in the Onn apps. For everything else, FilmPlus with a debrid account should be all you need (along with an add blocker or VPN like Surfshark).

I never look at those Free channels because most of them have commercials. I refuse to do any commericals unless it’s live Sports or News channels

I would suggest stremio and a debrid service (real debrid or torbox).

Here are a couple of IPTV options. 1st one is Hydrogen. I use Tivimate primarily as my player but there are several others. $10.99 per month for 5 simultaneous connections. I have a backup (Premium IPTV Access), which is $18 per month for 4 connections or $10.99 for 2 connections. Both have VOD. Check out YouTube videos (linked one guy below. He deals with Firesticks but I use the channels to find the apps). Search for the ‘best movie apps’ and I’m sure they’ll show apps like OnStream, Flix Vision, Ocean, etc. Once I add a ‘store’ called Unlinked and add a few different stores in it, lots of apps will be there to choose. In the Play Store, make sure to turn off the security function (under the email address in the top right hand corner).

Hi, Go to Troypoint.com

Search for Kodi install and follow the instructions to the tee for the latest (not beta). You will need a service such as Torbox, cost around $3.00/month. Troypoint gives full instructions.

Then search for Fenlightam or Umbrella and install.

Click on Fenlightam then search, then tv shows, then new search: type Beat Bobby Flay and you will find 43 seasons.

Hope this helps.

Hello Mike,
Thank you for considering and stating EagleCast TV as a good service, if you just reach support and ask for your specific show, they honor the request.
I took the liberty and forwarded your post to them, they confirmed that your favorite shows will be added right away.

Thanks
