I came across this Youtube video, if this is what is going to happen, then Apple are making a huge play into the gaming market. In the video it explains why at A17 chip has to be throttled on iPhone but in the Apple TV it is going to run at full power for hours allowing for gaming, AI and lots more esp with the N1 wifi chip. I understand that the vast majority members will be in the Android market, I made the jump 18 months ago and to be honest wish I had done so earlier. As for not being able to side load, I have no need, the App Store has been increasing the apps available. And yes, I understand that for some not being able to side load will be an issue, but for me it works a treat as it is. And the price is going to make it extremely good value for gaming not just streaming. 2026 is going to be a great year!
With Amazon and Google gradually crippling their devices to prevent (illegal) streaming, how long before Apple do the same?
With Android devices people tend to find ways around the restrictions (or buy cheap devices that aren’t affected), but it’s a much different proposition with Apple’s closed ecosystem
Apple’s been doing that long before Google even thought about it.
Any Movie/TV streaming app get pulled quickly from the Apple Store, even when disguised as a totally different app.
Honestly surprised they allow Stremio(Lite) on the app store.
Jailbreaking is all but dead, though sideloading is still struggling along.
I currently use sidestore+Livecontainer to sideload an unlimited amount of apps(ipa’s,) though they tend to be much harder to find than Android apks.
Maybe they will, or maybe they won’t. I have no problem with Apples closed system due to the integration with my iPads, Macs, iPhones. I jumped to Apple when they started introducing van’s and use TiviMax ( not sure if owned by the the same company that makes TiviMate but is similar look and feel with a few minor differences). With the A17 chips it will outperform anything that smart TV’s can provide (I exclude 8K and other very high definition screens, but I may be wrong). and as a replacement for Nintendo etc with more developers working on apple tv friendly games it is going to take a large bite into the Nintendo, playstation as well as Shield user base - just my opinion, The A17 chip will be considerably faster than the.ArmCortex-A57. I guess there will be a lot of reviews comparing the Apple TV to other premier devices as well as for the first time gaming consoles. And of course it will be less the 1/3 the price of a playstation PS5 ($550 vs $160 (expected cost may be less). And I get it that some people will always want to tinker around with Kody or android devices, I just love that it just works, is fast, smooth, simple UI.
Apple already does. A couple of very iffy apps snuck into the AppStore this year but they’ll be gone soon!
Yeah, but it’s Apple. No Thanks
I have had an Apple for quite a while but use a Shield usually. But I set up my Apple to check for updates yesterday and really noticed how much faster the response is than on the Shield. As you say, can’t sideload, but the main thing I have sideloaded was tivimate. Found a tivimax on the Apple and while not exactly the same it works well. I’m thinking of forgetting the Shield and using the Apple, might even buy the new one when it comes out.
I do not think that the word “might” is in the equation for me. Cant wait for the new Apple TV, use TiviMax too. I love the ability to sync online. I always backup whenever I add a new show, movie or fav to tivimax enables me to reset from latest version which I fund very useful.
I do understand that people like to stay on android. I think if Shiled had been upgrading hardware it maybe better than the present Apple TV 4K but as it is, with the new machine and the extra powerful chip, more memory etc with ability to play games it will be a huge game changer. just my opinion.
My first computer was an Apple II+ but then came along the open source PC which attracted everyone. Over the last 10 years I have migrated back to Apple; iPhone, iPad(s), iMac 24 and Apple TV (recently). I love the Apple TV with Tivimax and I can’t wait to get my hands on the new box. The 4K is pretty expensive but if what you say is true about the cost/performance of the new one, I’m in.
I jumped over to Apple when they had vpn/s in App store
I’ve started leaning towards Apple more (phone, iPad) but still use my One 4K Pro mostly because I can side load BBC iPlayer and ITVX. Has anyone found a way to get these apps on to Apple TV? I tried one and put my VPN to UK but it still only gave me Canadian apps
so I returned it. It was a slick box though so I’d seriously consider getting the new one when it comes out if I can get those 2 apps on it.
maybe try another vpn??
Good idea, thanks, although I did use SurfShark, reportedly the best ![]()
Once the new box comes out, I’ll probably buy one and try again.
