Fiber usually comes with an Ethernet connector out of the box. If so, just connect the Ethernet cable to the WAN port. No modem needed.
The fiber comes into the house with a tiny cord and a small end that fits into the modem from the provider. It doesnt come with an end that would fit into my router wan port. Do you or anyone have ideas about getting around this?
That’s odd. Any fibre I’ve known comes into your residence and terminates inside a large metal box containing a device that turns the optical signal into a useable signal for devices like modem/routers, which connect to that device via an Ethernet cable. Sorry I don’t know all the technical terms for the fiber to ethernet sevices. Time to do some learning for me.
This is what I found:
Fiber optic internet for home use typically converts from fiber to copper at an ONT or Optical Network Terminal.
I do not know what an ONT is at all. I just dont want two routers running at the same time.
ONT is an Optical Network Terminal. It changes the signal from an optical one to one that your device or modem can use via an Ethernet cable.
Which one would be the best for me to purchase.
I would contact your fiber provider and ask them.
I did ask them and they dont provide just a modem. Only combo units.
But what’s wrong with a combo unit? That’s what I use. My fibre connects to the ISP supplied ONT and then I have an Ethernet cable out of that connected to the combo supplied Arris router/modem. Then I either connect by WiFi or plug another Ethernet cable into the supplied device which goes to my Shield Pro. I pay for 150MBs rated speed and both my WiFi and Ethernet give me all of that. No loss of speed for me. I use the 5GHz band for WiFi only and have the 2.4GHz turned off, but all my devices are located in the same room as the router/modem and about 10-15 ft away. Modem/Router is about 3 ft off the ground out in the open and viewable from anywhere in the room, no obstructions at all.
What hardware is your ISP providing? Can you give an example of the make and model?
The make of the combo unit is Halny. Im not sure what the exact model is. I really dont want a combo unit however my internet provider only has a combo. Soneone said i dont even need a modem.
That’s what we always get. Combo units from the ISPs here in Canada. I still cannot comprehend why it matters? You can always log jnto the device and modify what you want, including turning stuff off.
I guess you can buy another Halny GPON ONT without the WiFi. Like this one: HALNy HL-1GE | ONT | GPON ONT B+ SC/APC, 1x RJ45 1000Mb/s, Brid
