Launcher Rankings

How does one dertermine whether the launchers are to blame for bricking?

Good question Morph.
It’s just a strong hunch based upon info gleaned from people who have had similar experience with the third party launchers vs the stock launchers with the update along with previous experiences with with a few computers who have had their boot partitions screwed up.

@Morph21 it’s pretty unlikely your device was bricked by the launcher, the most common problem that I’ve seen is when you add a launcher to USB storage and it is configured to replace the standard launcher. You said you had a couple Onn devices, were you running USB storage on them?

The Google/Android TV devices will install to the USB assuming you set it up in the developers options and you have to move the app to internal (on device) storage with that OS.

I personally would recommend the launcher run on device storage.

I’ve run Projectivy on Firestick, Google/Android TV Onn devices and have never seen a bricked device but USB storage while really handy is a pain, for me because it works perfectly for a long time then when it doesn’t it can be a problem in so many ways.

I had some posts about the Android 14 update, almost all of the issues were directly related to USB storage and options that were set and silently reset by the update.

I have never used external storage on any of my boxes and can tell you 100% my ONN 4K Pro was bricked 2 times from Launchers. First Wolf, then Projectivy. Others here have had the same issue. Lucky it was fairly easy to reset the box. After going 0-2 decided I didn’t want to strikeout and didn’t really need a launcher in the first place. Just wanted to check it out

The launchers were never on the USB devices, Timwort.
The newer 4k did not have a USB attached when the the update was pushed, nor during my attempts to restore it.

Never had a launcher make me have to reset a device tbh.
I see bricking a device as unrecoverable, turning into a paperweight.

Well then, newer 4k was bricked…the older one restored but with less functionality.

What are the extra features that make it worth paying for? I’m new to this launcher.

For me using custom wallpaper’s and icons.

I do recall trying to setup USB storage but solely for tivimate recordings. I never got it to work properly. I don’t believe I had the dongles connected when it occurred. Both Onn devices were the original 4k boxes and could not be recovered at all and were completely lost.

Dispatch #1 if you have a Plex Server

Wow-I have gotten a lot of responses referencing ā€œbrickingā€ from using launchers. It is a major threat that means I should avoid setting up an alternative launcher?

Projectivy is the best launcher around!

Hello Members, I am planning on exploring several launchers during this long holiday weekend. Once I have on installed, do I need to uninstall it or delete it to test another launcher?

It should be like any app. After testing you should be able to shut it off, or simply switch back to stock launcher, and then install and test your next one.

Going to jump on this version right now! Thanks for sharing this image.

I haven’t used it, but I believe Launcher Manager will allow you toggle between multiple launchers that are installed. Maybe others can chime in who have used it.
