I use Kodi on Windows, MacBook, NVIDIA Shield, Pixel 8 Pro and a Chromebook. We all have had simple issues with fixes either stumbled upon or with Troy to the rescue. This Windows/Kodi only has had me stumped for some time. Searched here (on Google too) for a Windows/Kodi/Shutdown/Crash problem with no results. The issue with Windows 11 and Kodi is the Power/Quit command and then Kodi crashes and hangs. It’s one of those intermittent problems. After a Kodi install, shut down is immediate. Perfect. But over the course of use, Kodi suddenly will crash on quit. I have tried over the years, reinstalled, clean reinstall, Revo Uninstaller, clean Windows installations, Open Wizard and a host of other utilities I am ashamed to admit. Currently on Win11 Home 25H2 clean install during Christmas. Kodi soon after. No build, no skin. No frills. Just my private network, Umbrella, Fen Light and have tested various popular addons since the 25th. I have kept a log to see what APK, addon or program installed on Windows or Kodi may be the culprit. No suspects yet; but be assured, the crash is coming. I don’t see it now but over the last ten years Kodi will crash at some point on Power/Quit. It’s no game of life changer, I know where Task Manager is. It’s just one of those annoying bugs. What is causing Kodi on Windows to not play along? I feel that a programing error will have many causes just as will a fix have solutions. A fix for Kodi crashing when using a customized skin Long story short….am I alone here or have any of you experienced this? And if so……..a fix?
I feel your pain and I wish I could have an answer for you because I to for some time now have battled an issue similar to your’s and I don’t know if they could be related but I tried, uninstalling, reinstalling, with a build, without a build, just addon’s , just one addon , checked app permissions Kodi is good, I check unknown sources tab and don’t find Kodi in there ? Wasn’t it in there before?its not now , I have a problem with a few of my favorite addon’s like Umbrella, Seren,FenLightAM where all you see is the “working”circle or you get a pop up screen saying “one or more things fail to play” so on the Kodi remote I click on 3 line button, it show the apps that are running with time and it shows Kodi with 0 minutes so I open it and force stop then clear cache then open Kodi again works for a few seconds then stops again, at this point Stremio came into play so I jumped on it. Stremio is my go to now but still working on Kodi, and hope to with TroyPoint friends can come to a solution one day, I still think it’s a good working platform. Oh God I hope that I haven’t missed the point of this topic and ramble on ![]()
Hi @jhsimpich - Completely understand the headaches and frustration here. If you are continually having these issues with Kodi I suggest giving Stremio a shot. Not sure if you’ve read this one yet but this is a good reason why Stremio might be a better solution for you than Kodi - Stremio vs Kodi: Which Streaming App is Better in 2026?
Thanks! You and I have shared the pain. I can feel your response came from the heart. Yes, I too like Stremio and watched some last night after my rant. And yep, Kodi is still a very good all in one source. Network for photos, music and recordings, streaming and OVA local broadcasts. I gave up with IPTV on Kodi, to stupid to use. Tivimate for me.
Other than a better interface Plex does nothing a whole lot different. Plex on Linux does really well but above my skills. I have a Plex pass and do enjoy using it. The wife finds it much easier to navigate. Kodi skins are fun as are the builds but as you know problems do pop up, where Plex is more stable. Maybe someday I’ll dive into Linux. But the ease and functionality of Google TV makes this fun where at my age the learning curve on the Penguinator would probably eat up all the time I have left. LOL ![]()
Thanks for the link! ![]()
Yep can’t forget about Plex!
Change your power options menu action. I believe by default the “quit" option does something more like hiding in the background on streaming devices. Probably attempts the same type of thing in Windows.
Settings > Skin Settings > Home Layout > Customize Power Menu
Under the " Quit” section, or whatever button label you usually use to attempt to close Kodi, click where it says “change action". In the pop-up go down to “Kodi Command" and then select “Shutdown".
See if that works. If not, you may have to go to "Customize home menu and shelves” instead of "customize power menu”.
Also, in Windows you can always do the ctrl+alt+del method to get to task manager and kill the app that way. However, make sure that everything has been saved in Kodi and there’s nothing updating. On a normal shutdown of Kodi it will update your settings file and wait for things to finish before fully shutting down. If you use task manager then this won’t happen.
Also, have to ask, did you download the Windows version of Kodi directly from kodi.tv/download and make sure to select the correct 32 or 64 bit version?
Hi Jayhawks659, “Change my power options menu” OK, but with Kodi on Windows 21.3 downloaded from http://kodi.tv/download at 64-bit, I do not see a path you describe from “Settings > Skin Settings > Home Layout > Customize Power Menu.”
Settings, sure. Skin Settings, ok. But the path differs there. My path is “Settings / Interface / Skin/ etc. I cannot see a “Customize Power Options Menu.” The actual power options menu that I see on shutdown has “Exit, Power off system, Custom shutdown timer, Suspend and Reboot.
There is a path, “Settings / System / Power saving / Shutdown function….with the options to: Shutdown, Suspend, Quit or Minimise [sic].
I also do not have any setting at all which refer to “change action, Kodi Command or Customize home menu and shelves.”
Your dedication to helping us poor newbs is so admiral. Your posts on IPTV have been very helpful to me. But I am at a loss on how to follow your directions.
I’d have to download it on Windows to see the differences. I was about to clock in for work and was going off of my TV setup. But I would still play with the options available to you and see what happens. That’s how I’ve learned a lot of this stuff. If you have a backup of Kodi saved then feel free to play around. You can always do a restore. I would assume that “shutdown" refers to the program itself and not your entire PC. But make sure you have everything saved on your computer just in case that is what happens.
Thank you friend. I am using TP forks on Android to test and try APKs with Kodi. Windows Kodi has OSMC customizations but haven’t tried it. Yep, I do back things up. 3-2-1 backup plan. And you bet, I have broken a lot of software. I have a current Win 11 image in my desk drawer. I have an external drive doing incremental B/U of all drives.. All of it is backed up to the cloud…on two different sites. I’ve thought of going the Synology route but never pulled the trigger.
BTW…Kodi on Windows….Shutdown in the options does shutdown Windows.
Thanks again for reaching out.![]()
