When I click on Kodi to open it, the screen goes black and then back to the Firestick homepage. Turned off TV, unplugged Firestick, replugged Firestick and turned TV back on. Didn’t fix the problem.

I don’t use a firestick; I use an Android TV box. That has happened to me occasionally. What I do is go to apps, click on Kodi, clear cache, and force stop. Then I go back and re-open Kodi and all works as normal. Maybe you are out of space?
Usually an indication the cache is full. Try clearing it and then set up a maintenance wizard to clear cache on startup.
