I am running Kodi 19.4 on a 2nd generation Firecube and have recently experienced some audio issues with my AV receiver(s) that I have not had before (happened with 2 different builds). One issue is after playing an episode of a TV show in Kodi, the audio goes in and out on the next video that I watch. I had an Onokyo receiver that made clicking noises in conjunction with the audio in and out. I replaced that with a Yamaha receiver thinkiing that was the issue but the audio is still going in and out. And, when I try to use Youtube TV after exiting Kodi, it repeatedly kicks me out until I either turn off my receiver or restart my Firecube. I tried changing the Kodi setting in audio to not keep the audio device alive but it did not help. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
What other apps do you use other than Kodi? Any audio issues when you use those?
my guess is it in the connections or the cables you are using it doesnt make sence that the firecube or kodi would do this i would think its a connection issue
I use an IPTV app, Youtube TV, Youtube. All of which cannot be played until I either restart the receiver or the Firecube. I’m thinking the core issue is something with Kodi because all of my apps play perfectly until I watch something in Kodi then it all goes south.
Well I just switched av receivers and basically unconnected and reconnected so I am pretty sure the connections are OK. All apps work perfectly until I play something in Kodi, then it all goes south.
Make sure the “Passthrough” setting is ON.
It is along with all the other ones that are optional once passthrough is selected.
delete kodi and reinstall
Try swapping the hdmi cables out.
Good thought. But…just uninstalled and reinstalled and the same issues remain.
Just tried that…still having the same issues.
The clicking is your AVR switching sound processing modes. Make sure your sound processing mode is set to “direct” if it’s Onkyo (I have one, so I know what it’s called). On the Yamaha it might be called something different. Then check what codecs your receiver is capable of. Make sure in Kodi audio settings you turn on audio passthrough and ONLY check the options that you know your AVR can handle. Also make sure in your cube settings that the output is set to DD+ or whatever the maximum is.
DO NOT SELECT TRUEHD IN THE KODI PASSTHROUGH SETTINGS!
None of the fire TV products are capable of TrueHD passthrough. This may be your issue. Even if your AVR is capable, the cube is not.
I provided a solution with no explanation, so here is that.
Your AVR is automatically switching modes based upon the audio track that is played in Kodi. If your AVR has a blue light on it to indicate when a Dolby Atmos track is playing then it will illuminate. If it doesn’t, you’ll hear the clicking but won’t see the light. Your Kodi audio settings have to match what your AVR is capable of. And the output configuration should be set to “optimized” to make sure the switching happens like it’s supposed to. Your Cube audio settings should really be set to automatic so it switches when necessary as well. Somehow when you are playing something in Kodi your AVR makes the appropriate switch to play the surround sound track. But when you are done watching and go back to the menu screen it is not automatically switching back. It is then “stuck” and not matching the audio output of the next source you are playing.
Jayhawk,
Thank you for the information. I switched my Yamaha to “Pure Direct” and then checked all the boxes in Kodi that the receiver is capable of. From what I can see, there is no option in Kodi for TRUEHD. My audio settings on the firecube are set to best available. I watched part of a quick TV episode in Kodi, forced closed it and still are having the same issues.
Is your Cube plugged directly into the AVR or do you have it plugged into the TV and you’re using the ARC port to run the audio back to the AVR?
The Cube is connected directly to the AVR.
Update:
I changed the audio setting in output configuration to fixed. This seems to have resolved the issues that I had been experiencing.
Thank you all for your help with this!

What about a sonos surround system… arc ultra, sub gen 4, and two era 300s… would you happen to know what setting i need to do for passthrough to work correctly ?
Passthrough should be a setting in your Streaming Device. Should be under the settings>Sound and Audio section.
