That’s any forum anywhere on the internet. It’s just the way it goes. If I were running this forum I would find a way to force first-time users to read and acknowledge the welcome post and then provide recommended posts to read based on keywords before allowing a new post. The search function here isn’t that great either. Sometimes I have better luck using Google and typing “Troypoint” before the keywords I’m looking for in order to find a post I’ve already read in the past.
That’s so true. I always give them an answer, point them in the right direction and nudge them along their journey. I don’t mind really, I have all the time in the world.
You all bring up some great points here. Unfortunately, nobody reads the welcome email that they receive immediately upon registering directing them to the rules and regs. Even if it were hand delivered to their front door with signature required, it still wouldn’t get read. As many of you have stated, that’s just the times we live in and everyone wants it done for them without any work on their part.
Here’s something that I just did that will hopefully help a bit. I will also think more about this over the upcoming days and try to figure out some other things that can I can implement early next week when back.
New users WILL NOT be able to post a new topic within the first 24 hours of registering anymore. The default on this was 3 topics but I think changing this to zero will force them to search for the problem they are facing. I also changed reply to topics from 3 to 1 in the first 24 hours. Again, hoping they will do some work on their part to find what they are looking for.
I will also create a video for both first time users and those who have been here for awhile. Lots of things that can be done to help everyone if we are all on the same page.
I appreciate your feedback on this problem. Thank you all for your input.
Like many others, being a Troypoint founding member close to the beginning allowed me to benefit from the many posts and tutorials when streaming technology (and this site), was relatively new and evolving. Proficiency and educational knowledge in this technology takes time and experience. New subscribers need to understand that when using Troypoint, they have the responsibility to learn and educate themselves with the many resources on this site rather than get instant answers on their inquiries. If they do that, it will be worth their time and ours.
New people join to learn from a trusted site, a tutorial video on how to use / search on the forum to find answers would help new users - this would be in their welcome email
Here’s a great example of what this thread is about. The person posted this in the very same Thread where the very first post was Troy’s video and explanation as to how to get the Alibaba service. But this stuff happens all the time here
I have a different take on this. Many people are just looking for connection. Cord cutting is a pretty daunting adventure for many people. And it is constantly changing at a pace so many are not able to keep up with. Something that is second nature to one person when it could be black hole to another (technically challenge). This is not a plug-n-play hobby. Sometimes even forgetting a colon or a forward slash can cause so much grief and frustration. You also have to take into account the age span of people just starting out. Thinking about the horrors mom or dad just getting a computer or new phone.
So just remember this site is really for the newbie, technically challenged, senior citizen, and most commonly frustrated that they forgot a forward slash. If it’s not a site for these people it should be stated that they are not welcome here. If a posed question bothers you then just ignore it.
still an effort to learn goes a long way the ali post started off one one mine posting what i had found then troy did the vidio but even though both posts had links i got buried with people asking for a link try harder folks fyi i am a 74 yr old senior if i can learn so can you
Davduck, I’m not that far behind you in age. I do suffer from CRS, CSS and CHS.
I have a suggestion for Troy. Maybe add another category called “Questions and answers for dummies and newbies”. If somebody, me included, posts in another category then Draco can move the offending question to that category.
(*** I just want to say this to Troy and the Founding Members. That without your commitment to this hobby and your help, whether here on this board and the videos you produce, I know myself and many others would still be in the dark on anything called “cord cutting”. You can’t even imagine how much this has helped so many people including me. You are appreciated more than you know and it IS because of you that this world is a better place.)
