How is data usage tracked. My ISP provides (Xfinity) provides 1229 GB on my plan. They charge me an extra 10.00 for an extra 50 GB if I go over 1229 GB. I was wondering what the average users data usage is. Is there a way I can monitor data usage. I’m having a hard time trusting my ISP on telling me how much data I’m using.
Ok Data usage on what device? Not sure why you would use Data when WiFi internet is available, or internet in general.
Usually your provider offers you a way to watch your data… your account with them log on and you can see.
Out of curiosity, what would be the cost of unlimited? Days caps can easily be gone over if streaming. If you dont use alot then thats fine.
Unlimited data would be about 80.00 a month.
I’m retired and home all day. My plan now is 50.00 and 10.00 for each 50G if I go over. I watch the news and movies. I’m trying to understand data usage. Do apps like fire tv use my data for their own purpose that I’m paying for? Would blocking their adds slow data usage? I would like to be able to see what devices are using data. I’m looking at this like I would my electricity and don’t trust Xfinity.
Data usage charges on my Xfinity router.
Hey @ELS (Ernie? ) I also use Comcast/Xfinity…same plan as you. The easiest way I’ve found to monitor it is to go to your Xfinity.com account site…log in & click on Devices. From there you can just scroll down to the Data Usage Overview & see where you stand. Just gotta do the math from there…I usually avg about 30GB/day (just me & my pup) very seldom have I hit 1TB/mo. Hope that helps…
Edit: One other thing…if you’re retired, then like me you probably grew up with black & white tv…so just happy if it’s in color…leave the 4K & even the 1080p alone & go with the 720p…that’s what will eat up yer data…post haste!
Thank you so much. I just got off the phone to try and understand data usage. I learned some things. Even when I’m not watching something on my fire tv it’s connected to my network online and it has the potential to be using my data. Some devices are using Wi-Fi and some Ethernet. The person said for 11.00 a month I could get unlimited data so I did that. The fact that you use such little data is amazing. But again I’m home all day and watch a lot of streaming tv. This website “Troypoint” is the best. I just have to get better at using everything out there. I have Kodi but it’s not that user friendly. Only use it for addons. I don’t like the previews that are played on my fire tv. I wish I could just have a screen saver instead of the stuff being thrown in my face that I don’t care about.
If it’s only $11.00 & no “hidden fees” then it may well be worth it for your peace of mind. I am also retired & home all day…I use to monitor it closely but my viewing habits & whatever frugality I possess always had me between 8 - 900GB per month, so now, I just occasionally take a peek. Since I started streaming with the iptv services & movie apps, I look at any additional monthly costs as still substantially lower than what I used to pay monthly with a cable package…& that’s what cutting the cord is all about
