NOTE. Zorin is free but the full version cost a few bucks and imho is worth it for a newbie. Linuxmint is completely free and also newbie friendly. Another “beginner” distro to look at is Elementry Linux.
sktn77a has a good point. What processor does your HP desktop have? If it is only one or two generations older than the 8th gen. Intel or like-age AMD CPUs, you should be able to do a simple registry hack and then do an upgrade to Win11 without losing your apps and files. I got my 6th gen. Surface tablet on Win11. Google “install windows 11 on unsupported computer” as he said. Worth investigating.
Any Linux system, I use Linux Mint with Surfshark and is fully compatible.
Also Win 10 -
Have been using McAfee for past year; driven crazy by their pop-ups that customer support says cannot be disabled. Suggestions for another antivirus that’s not so anti-customer?
I use McAfee on a Hewlett-Packard PC with Windows 10 and I never get any pop-ups from mcafee. I got an ad blocker that works really good. Are these pop-ups from McAfee are advertisements or they process issues.?
I am a PC gamer, will Linux allow me to game Call of Duty and other online and multi-player games and platforms like X-Box, and PlayStation?
In a word, not seamlessly AFAIK.
Linux isn’t really appropriate for everyone’s needs. It more than meets mine, because I am not a gamer.
Windows 11 on ANY PC even without a CPU on the official list of compatible processors.
ZDNET covers it all it this article.
(My warning…you need a duo core CPU…at least a Celeron 1.4 Mhz…about a 15 plus year old CPU. Do not update Windows…just let security updates in,)
[ZD Net article: You can upgrade your old PC to Windows 11 - even if Microsoft says it’s ‘incompatible’. Here’s how
You don’t have to throw away a perfectly good PC just because it doesn’t meet Microsoft’s strict Windows 11 compatibility standards. Here’s how you can work around the restrictions and safely upgrade a Windows 10 PC. ](You can upgrade your old PC to Windows 11 - even if Microsoft says it's 'incompatible'. Here's how | ZDNET)
I had McAfee for a few years. It was OK, but at times, I wondered if it actually did anything because the report of findings seemed to always be the same. I subscribe to and use Surfshark on my devices now. It is much less expensive offers a full time VPN and a masked email service. I would not go back to McAfee if it were free:-)
I was very appreciative of all the responses to my original query, especially from knowledgeable folks and Patrons like you. Early on I tried to install Linus, but ran into a lot of trouble. I tried again about a month ago with success. I then had trouble seeing how to access pix and vids on my phone and loading them into the Linus OS, but I solved that too. I wanted to thank Troypoint and everyone who responded with suggestions, but I do not see a way to make a blanket post. Anyway, Thanks. This is a good source for relevant and helpful information:-)
Congrats!!! Linux grows on you once you take that 1st step and you will see that now days it’s not as terrible as others claim.
