For live TV OTA I currently use a Hauppauge dual USB turner plugged into my Shield TV Pro, and use the live channels app that is built into Shield, but as it is no longer supported in often does not show the program guide correctly and other minor annoyances. I also have the OTA tuned in with Plex and have a lifetime subscription, but Plex just freezes up buffers live tv and is not easy to just channel surf. I don’t want a anything that requires a monthly payment, so open to suggestions.
Pretty hard to beat at the price. I have one and its a simple setup and comes with …er…I think 250mb storage built in with a usb to add more if needed. No subs and built in epg for ota and fast channels that they add for free. You can record fast channels as well.
i really like my tablo i have had it a couple years now it works great, mine is older it is a 4 tuner which will allow me to record 4 shows at once if i want to i have a 2 terabyte hard drive hooked up to it you can also pause and back up live ota tv which is nice mine is the hdmi version, also have tablo app on my nvida sheild pro which is also nice but i do pay for the guide and commercial skip dont think they offer the commercial skip anymore
Thank for this info. Been wanting to buy this…
***note… the tablo i’m talking about is the latest 4th gen tablo dual tuner. It’s my understanding that a 4th gen quad tuner is due soon.
Has anyone try Tablo device. Its a great device to cut the cable. You buy the device and you get all locals channel on your area plus more. You dont have to pay for subscription. You could record, go back on live tv. I recomend to check it out. It’s Great
Ive had tablo since the 1st gen. I think its a great device with a great UI. Currently I have the tablotv version
When researching Tablo, it seems the older models still require a subscription fee for the guide info. The newer gen 4 model does not. I’m not even sure if you could buy a subscription from Tablo for the guide data. I like the guide, I would get the gen. 4, they seem like pretty useful devices, specially if you like both antenna and streaming.
True, but bear in mind, it’s just like a TV - uses an antenna to get the local channels. It’s main strength is that you only need a single antenna connection to the Tablo (instead of every TV) and connect the TVs to the Tablo via your home WiFi network. Poor TV reception, poor Tablo reception.
I have tablo 4th gen and love it.
I just bought a Tablo 4th gen 4 tuner to replace my Recast which was starting to have some issues. It has 128G internal storage and a USB port for additional storage via a USB drive. The Ethernet port is 100 Mbps but that works fine, I might try a 1000 Mbps dongle in the USB but haven’t yet.
I couldn’t be happier, I am about 40 miles away from the broadcast towers and have an OLD outdoor antenna. I have a poor signal from CBS and ABC although CBS was worse than ABC.
So far after installing the Tablo the software based signal enhancer built into the Tablo has cleared those issues even through a couple thunder showers, time will tell but so far it has been great.
Works on my Firesticks, ONN gen 1 and Gen 2 and Google Chromecast HD
The only issues I have is with the free guide in that it doesn’t seem to propagate completely to the Android streaming device I use, but it does propagate to my phone app.
I use the phone to set recordings up but if I have channel data it can be set on the streaming device instead. From what I have read Tablo knows about this.
I also found that I had to set favorites from the phone but that’s not really a big deal. I do like the Tablo app after getting use to it, there is always a little learning curve but the app works well and the play back is outstanding, so far I really like it.
I got mine directly from Tablo, bought it on a Friday and had it on Monday, they had it for 20 USD off, probably still do for the 4 tuner, my cost was 128 USD with tax, free shipping.
Really glad I got it.
Did you notice any difference in reception when you switched to the Tablo? I’ve never been impressed with the reception on the recast but other that one channel (PBS) it work OK. I’d like to get better reception on this channel if possible. I’ve considered an HDhomerun and a Tablo to replace it as I only use its’ network distribution feature throughout the house and not the DVR features.
Well this morning I had a recording showing failed on CBS, while I haven’t had any issues until today it tells me the signal is still weak.
I mentioned in my comment that it had been weak but seemed stronger with the Tablo software antenna amplification so now I am going to pay more attention and give it some time. I do think the antenna amplifier worked but it can only do so much.
I had been considering a powered Channel Master amplified splitter, I have been dealing with a weak channels for awhile but it isn’t so bad that I can’t live with it… so I am kind of on the fence, seems kind of like you are.
Sorry, I know that’s a non answer but it’s where I am right now.
Yeah, I’ve tried all the usual solutions - I have a Channel Master 8 bay in the attic. I’ve tried RG6/RG11 cabling, antenna amplifiers (just made the problem worse), dedicated lo-VHF antenna with splitter… No luck. Its a weak signal (channel 3) and I guess I just need a very sensitive, high quality tuner (which the Recast is not).
