Mouse Toggle is what I use, and it works flawlessly. If I need more functionality for a mouse, trackpad, or keyboard and more. Then I will use the Shield TV Remote app I have installed on my phone and tablet.
Let’s face it. Unless you are a constantly experimenting and testing devices, hardware, and software. You really don’t need some Ron Popeil type of gadget to accomplish what most normies do. The apps below are more than sufficient to suit most people’s uses.
I love my mini keyboard. I tried mouse toggle and found it awkward to use. I leave the dongle plugged into the shield then when I need to do any major typing or scrolling/selecting I grab the keyboard and turn it on. Other than that it’s the nvidia triangle.
That’s great you like your keyboard and I am certain a heavy techie such as yourself would find benefit it its use. My post was more for the normie’s use where using a mouse, trackpad, and keyboard is occasional at best.
Don’t see the need for most people to add another piece of hardware when a free software app is just as efficient for the average end user experience.
Oh I agree PF. For me the added app on my phone wouldn’t function unless I shut off my vpn. So rather than go through the added aggrivation I just turn on the keyboard and I’m g2g.
Of course for basic day to day I use the triangle remote. Thank god we all have these multiple options to do what we want the way we want.
Have fun and STREAM ON!!
That’s weird. My Shield Remote app works whether my VPN is on or off. In fact, on my main Shield, which is ethernet connected, will still connect with my wifi phone or tablet.
Just tried it without vpn and it won’t connect to the shield. Doesn’t work for me and I never use it so it’s a distant project for another time. Have a great day.
To answer your question- What I would do if budget was not an issue is follow the recommendations of the multitude and buy tne Shield Pro. When people ask me what box is “best” I always ask 1 what are you going to use it for (wants and needs), and 2. how much do you want to spend. Based on that I recommend the Nvidia, various mecool boxes, or the ONN. If budget is not an issue but I know all they want to do is watch tv and movies I will recommend the Onn over the Nvidia simply because I cant see recommending them paying 200.00 for a box when all they need is a 20,00 box
Whatever works best. I guess it’s a matter of what you grow used to using. I had an older shield device and never could get the hang of the remote. I bought a RII remote for it and have been using it on all my devices since.
If you want reliability I’d go for the shield…I have the 2017 shield for like 5 years and it’s still kicking and I have the 2019 pro … I know that there’s other top tiers, but I like the google certified
