How to Install VPN on Asus-Merlin Router with Policy-Based Routing

The following tutorial will show you how to install a VPN on Asus-Merlin Router.

We provide both a screenshot guide as well as a video guide to help you walk through this process.

Installing a VPN on a router allows you to “set it and forget it.” This allows you to protect devices like Roku, gaming systems, and other internet-connected devices that don’t support VPN apps.

The nice part about using “policy-based routing” on Asus-Merlin firmware is that we can define which devices on our network should be protected by a VPN and which ones shouldn’t.

I saw in a thread where someone suggested setting up the VPN directly on the router with the kill switch feature activated.

I use surfshark and it does have a kill switch feature however I have no clue of how to install it on my router with the kill switch activated. Looking for advice on where to get information on how to do this with Surfshark?

I’m still in the process of learning how to do this stuff, but so far I don’t see anywhere in the dashboard to activate the Surfshark Kill Switch…….

I have a ASUS RT-AX1800S router

Thank you

Might depend on the router used. I use asus routers and the kill switch is in the settings for client >>>network>>>killswitch

Thank you Sir……..

I will look for that setting

Thanks for the information but unfortunately, my router is not compatible with Merlin-firmware………

What make and model of router do you have? That info would help getting more focused responses aimed at your exact case use.

I have a ASUS RT-AX1800S ROUTER

Their site says your router has a vpn built in.

VPN server and client

For encrypted remote connection

With the virtual private network (VPN) server and VPN client, you can access your home network remotely or surf the internet no need for paid VPN services or a dedicated VPN server.

I went to the following and then down the bottom to more features.

not sure with stock firmware but it does have vpn settings, so look within the client settings for a kill switch. That particular model is low spec and merlin tends to only make firmware for newer models.

Thank you very much Miki…….

I was able to get some very good information on how to deal with this.

CHECK THIS OUT!!!

“Here’s how to set up a VPN client with a kill-switch–style block on your ASUS RT-AX1800S using the stock ASUSWRT firmware.
Since this model doesn’t have a one-click kill switch, we’ll use VPN + firewall rules to block internet traffic if the VPN drops.”

Of course I will !!!

For once I can finally provide some information that may help someone else.

It will be a couple of days before I’m finished this project.

From what I read so far this stuff is way above my pay grade

Luckily I have a good friend of many years that’s a big wig with Oracle that I’m sure I can get to help me implement this thing.

Have a great day guys
