How to Expand Internal Storage on Firestick & Fire TV Cube

The biggest complaint regarding the Amazon Fire TV Stick is the lack of internal storage. This device comes equipped with 8GB of internal storage but only 5GB is available due to the Fire OS operating system and apps that Amazon pre-installs. That remaining 5GB is quickly chewed up after we install all of our favorite…

Great guide, but I’m having issues. I have gotten the stick (4K second edition) to put apps on the USB drive, but that drive neither shows up under “storage”, nor do recordings go to that USB when using Tivimate. I set it up using the " sm partition disk:8,0 mixed 50" setting.

What am I doing wrong? Thanks!

I am following this guide on a 4K Max firestick, running OS 7.6.6.4 (PS7664/3772). I installed X-Plore File Manager from the Amazon App Store, as the instructions said. I have Developer Options enabled, and made sure X-Plore was enabled to install from other sources. When I select an app to move (MAX, in my case) and select “Copy to Clipboard”, the X-Plore UI freezes. No response to any remote clicks, except for Back. If I click back a couple times (without exiting), then I can move to the Internal Storage/Download folder, as the instructions say. However, hitting Back must clear the clipboard, because I no longer have the Paste option when I get there. I’ve tried using Move, as well, but Move doesn’t seem to give the option to change the destination (which is probably why the instructions use Copy to Clipboard, and then manually uninstall the app). What am I doing wrong? Or what should I do differently?

Pay attention to the arrow direction near top of screen. Select destination direction on one side and move or copy to the other.

If you read comments on EXPAND you see lots of issues. Don’t bother. Use NAS instead.

I made these changes in December 2023, and have been having no issues with space during installs or updates until recently. Starting around the 1st week of August, when I attempted to run an update on an app that is installed on the external drive, I get a message that there isn’t enough space, when there is definitely LOTS of space available on the external drive. Did something change with the FireStick?

For most 3rd party apps they cannot be updated while on the external drive. Unfortunately you have to transfer them to the Firestick, update it, and transfer it back to the external drive.

I started following this guide, but when I checked my OS version it is OS 6.7xxx. After clicking “check for updates”, nothing happens. How can I upgrade to OS 7X so I can add storage?

To add storage to Fire OS 6, you can use a USB flash drive or an external hard drive:
USB flash drive
Connect the USB flash drive to your Fire TV Stick using an OTG adapter. Then, you can:
Select Settings
Click My Fire TV
Click USB Drive
Select Format to Internal Storage
Click OK
Move apps to the USB drive

Thank you. So same as if I had OS 7x? No need to upgrade to 7?

It is my understanding that Amazon will roll out the ADB change to all Fire OSs. Some with 6 may still work but eventually even they will get the update blocking ADB and the Shell.

You can’t. You are stuck on 6.

This is not internal storage. This is freeing internal storage by moving user apps to external storage.

On firesticks Apps are placed on internal storage which can be extended by adding a flash drive and formatting it for internal. Recordings are sent to a drive formatted as external or removeable storage. Apps placed onto a USB drive will still have Data needed to function, stored on the devices internal storage. Although a storage device is attached to a streaming device, the sytem will designate it as either “Internal” or “External” storage depending on how you format it. I used a powered hub to attach extra storage to the Firesticks.
