How to Block Amazon Fire TV Updates

Yep a forced reboot would be a killer. Unless there was a way to boot in “safe mode”.

I agree, you should always use a VPN. This stops everyone from knowing what you are doing. Comcast will definitely track your connections, especially if you are downloading a lot of data (aka watching a movie). If you are connecting to an “unverified” source, they will take note and possibly start throttling your connection. In addition, if one of the unverified sites get clipped by the Feds, your identifiable IP address is in their logs.

I can confirm, turning it off or rebooting will trigger the OS 6.2.8.1 to download the update at startup. However, it doesn’t install the update right away. It still in waiting to install and can be removed still with the ADB clear command.

I’m not tech savvy but can someone explain the difference in the ADB commands to block updates between Troy’s and Tech DRUK? Tech Dr has one command:
pm clear com.amazon.device.software.ota
And Troy has two commands:
pm disable-user – user 0 com.amazon.device.software.ota.override and
pm disable-user --user 0 com.amazon.device.software.ota
I am on second gen cubes and have not gotten to the rollout of OS7.2.7.3 yet. I tried Tech Dr Permission Manager and Adguard but it ended up crippling Cinema. I had also done his ADB command fix. Not sure if I need to use the Troy version shell commands or stick with Tech Dr.

The commands do 2 different things. The single line ADB command clears any downloaded updates that are “pending”, in other words “waiting to be installed” and the other double set of commands blocks the downloads from being downloaded.
Techdoctoruk has an app that installs the two line update block, if you want to give it a go. It will work as long as your device has not already been updated with the latest Amazon update.
Using the Downloader app enter 72503 and click “Go”. Download and run.

Troypoint’s ADB commands

pm disable-user – user 0 com.amazon.device.software.ota.override and
pm disable-user --user 0 com.amazon.device.software.ota

Will prevent Amazon’s updates from downloading and installing.

If your operating system version allows them to work.

Teckdoctoruk ADB command

pm clear com.amazon.device.software.ota

Will remove an Amazon update that was downloaded and waiting for a restart to install.

It is just a temporary fix to hold us over until a permanent update blocker is made.

@MCat I just found another TDUK video where he does use the two commands. Thanks for the update.

So two FireTV Cube second generation at OS7.2.4.2 will not allow the block commands. I get “Security exception cannot disable a protected package” on both. It does clear the downloaded update. Not sure if it will keep trying to download that update or not.

I think all the devices will always continue to download the update when it see’s it’s not the current one. Until then, we just need to keep removing them and hope our devices do not freeze. If they freeze and the update it there, it will almost certainly install and there is little we can do about it.

I was fortunate enough to not have my 4K Max update. I have the tduk update blocker. So far still using Wolf Launcher. What I’m waiting for is Amazon to block accounts until you actually install their "mandatory " update. :face_with_spiral_eyes:

I am in the same boat. My 4k updated but the Max was still at 7.2.5.5 so it did take the commands to block. That being said, we don’t really know if and when Amazon can override them.

You are absolutely right. It’s all about the advertising money.

Being honest, I can live easily with the Amazon stock launcher but it’s the 3rd party apps I am concerned with. If they are no longer able to run, I would even have a hard time giving my two sticks to a friend.

me to, if I have no choice. I hate the layout.

Just had to restart my Firestick 4k. Every time I use the X-plore app, afterwards I can not access any apps on my external memory. I have to restart. I checked for OS updates before I restart, and never was there. After I restarted, I checked for updates again, and I got a ready to install . Ran the pm clear com.amazon.device.software.ota adb command. Now I have updates as never again. Close call. One more restart and the update would of installed. :grimacing:

If you’re able to put your vpn on your router it will work without disabling adguard.

Ya I don’t have that option. I live in a 6 unit apartment building, but thank you for the suggestion. Excellent idea.

I did reset to factory defaults, but neither option worked. I get a Security exception: Cannot disable a protected package: com.Amazon.device.software.ota

Doing a factory reset after getting the latest update will do nothing to remove the latest code that blocks modifying protected packages. In other words you got the update so now you’ll always get Amazon OS updates and can’t block them. Well until and if some teen hacker figures out how. There isn’t any way to “roll back” the OS.
