A new report by Enders Analysis puts Amazon Firesticks at the center of a growing piracy problem, blaming major tech companies for enabling what it calls an “industrial scale of theft.” The research firm warns that devices like the Firestick are being used to stream live sports and other content illegally, resulting in billions of…
always the sticks just shows there not up to the latest tech
Whats aggravating here is its the sports leagues that allready bring in the most profit that complain about this. Yes La Liga im pointing at you. Also note im American and dont care for soccer but its still infuriating to me. But at the same time thats the the only big money sport in Europe where here in the US we have like 4-5 that bring in big dollars.
The rise of piracy isnt going away just by banning Firesticks or forcing Amazon to close down their OS or restricting certain VPNs. People are always going to find a way. Theres always going to be a device, or connection that enables you to do this regardless of what governments and Tech Companies do to even try to lock us down, which guess what, the tech companies arent exactly trying that hard unless they get enough pressure to do so
European Golf and F1 generate tens of billions but football does generate the most out of the three.
My parents genuinely think it’s illegal to have a Firestick. The scaremongering does work in some respects but then they are in their 70s and struggle to send a text message.
It’s always billions in losses. They assume that everyone who watches a pirate video would be a paying customer. Not likely.
Personally the movies I watch, even the best ones, I’d wait for a free viewing on free TV. I pay for Netflix, my family watches it, and I pay for music. I have a Tidal subscription and still buy the occasional CD. I guess video has always been something I watched for free on TV and never got in the habit of buying it.
All this to say they aren’t loosing a nickel from me.
I watched a very good episode of Pablo Torre Finds Out where the guests were John Skipper (former ESPN CEO) and David Samson (former owner/president of the Florida Marlins). They made the very point that you made.
Samson and Skipper agreed that the losses to piracy were significant, but that losses were nowhere close to what the various sports leagues, pay TV and content suppliers claim.
