I highly suspect it is overheating. My brother had one that started to act up just like yours. One time we took a slightly damp cold cloth we had in the freezer and wrapped it around the casing of the stick when it stated to act up and it performed flawlessly once the heat dissipated. We ended up replacing it. Overheating can cause lots of different issues. Good luck,
There are a number of reasons for this issue. The top 2 are poor or week electrical, and overheating. I used the small extension provided but don’t forget you can get a high speed HDMI cable, say 6 ft and place the stick on top of a case fan or free standing one. The stick can also be plugged into the HDMI port of a top line Sound bar putting it more out in the air Lots of ways to reduce the heat problem. Personally even in a hot environment like Mexico my 4K Max sticks never had this issue, nor the hundreds I programmed and installed for tourists there either. What I did have was a few bad power bricks. So I always had a couple of spares on hand and would have them plugged into a power bar with surge protection. BTW I always shut the power off to my stick every night after clearing the cache, using background apps and process list and fast task killer. GL2U.
Walmart has the solution and it only costs $20. Good luck
I’ve read through these comments, especially concerning the overheating of the fire stick. Although originally I did this because of space limitations behind my TV, I use
a separate HDMI cable, with a female to female adapter, which is at least 24" from the TV. This should allow airflow around the fire stick, and sits on a window ledge where there is plenty of air circulation around the fire stick.
I know you all may think my decision was stupid, but since this Firestick is older, I had figured it was a faulty wire or something. So, I ended up getting a new Firestick, and it hadn’t shut off until now. However, it did just shut off, so I’m thinking obviously it is overheating.
So let me ask you this: I have two fire sticks. One that is connected to an HDMI switch that has Kodi (this is the one shutting off), and another one that I use A LOT more, which is my regular Firestick that I watch my YouTube TV on and most other apps. This one is directly connected to my TV. What I just decided to do is unplug the one I normally use and connect the one that is shutting off directly to the TV. I think from now on, I will unplug the one I’m not using. Will this possibly help?
No. Unplugging one has no affect on the other. Use a small fan and be sure the brick is good and plugged into main house current. After a full day of streaming I always cleaned the stick and fully shut the power off.
Thanks @Miki
Thanks for your advice. Correct me if I’m wrong but if I’m unplugging the Firestick that I’m not using wouldn’t that help that Firestick not overheat since it’s essentially not plugged to anything and being given a rest?
it would but if its still in an enclosed space it will still get warm
That’s exactly why I have mine plugged into a power bar with surge protection. One flick of the switch and it’s powered down. With constant plugging in and unplugging, especially on a daily basis, you run the risk of wearing out the HDMI contacts.
also check what apps that may be running in background
Here is another question, but I’m obviously not very techy at all. I believe Miki had mentioned a high speed six foot hdmi cable. If I type six foot hdmi will any of the cords essentially work for my Firestick. For example I see some mentioning 4k but my tv is not a 4k tv. Are there any links you could recommend for the HDMI cord that works for a Firestick?
all hdmi ports are the same just do google search lots will come up also make sure you have one male and one female end
Any modern hdmi 2.0 or 2.1 cable is just fine…
