Hello! I have recently purchased Smart mail. After reading their instructions, I’m totally lost on what to do. Is there anybody that can give me a lesson for dummies on how to get my smart mail in order? Do I need to contact everyone or can some stay on my old emai. This may be over my head As far as being technical. Please help if you can
Thanks…
I don’t know anything about Smart Mail. I’ve had the same Gmail account for at least 20 years and can’t think what a hassle it would be to change emails. As far as a need to contact everyone yes if you are switching emails and have several contacts, services, etc…on your present email you will need to make them all aware of your new email address.
Good morning @zaneejanee hope you’re having a good day. Just a quick question from this old man, and to clarify, is it “Smart Mail” or “Start Mail”?
Hello, video tutorial on this page.
That was where I was heading. Lol. Just wanted to be sure it was StartMail. Tx Troy and have a great week.
I apologize if this is incorrect place to post this didn’t see a place for Startmail?
I subscribed to it last year following TroyPoint really like it my renewal is up in Jan 2025. I see where there is a discount but it is for first year subscriptions. I know we could receive discount upping subs on Surfshark thanks to everyone here for that info
I was wondering if there was a way with Startmail also? If not it won’t break the bank but was curious so thought I would ask. Again thanks to all here you all are great and very much appreciated!
@TROYPOINT , so im starting to set up StartMail, i am trying to merge from Proton Plus Mail and i’m stumped at the IMAP info….i don’t think proton has that info–been searching and reading–and it seems that for security proton doesn’t allow cloud migration….any ideas for me or will it just not work….
Hello, see this.
been trying
since you replied and i just can’t figure it out….
….i really don’t have that many emails, maybe 100 or so, maybe i will just take the time to forward them over….we’ll see, i need to take a break for now….
Please reach out to StartMail support for additional help. They are really good.
Thanks Troy I will do that, but prob tomorrow cuz right about now itz time for a turkey sandwich and a nap….it just seemed like proton and startmail were fighting with each other because they are both trying to be so private….but it well could have been all on me also….
A response from StartMail after i explained my situation….
We appreciate you being a new StartMail customer and it’s not you!
We’d like to help and due to their end-to-end encryption policies, ProtonMail does not support IMAP access, which means we’re unable to connect to your Proton account to perform a migration.
To manually transfer messages from Proton to StartMail, you’ll need to use the Proton Mail Bridge application, which allows access to Proton messages through a local mail client (such as Thunderbird).
The mail client will need to be configured with your StartMail account so that messages can be manually copied between accounts.
Once both email addresses are set up in the mail client, copy all messages by bulk selecting the messages you want to export:
Then right click and select Move to, and select a folder in the StartMail email address you want to move the messages to.
-
To create an IMAP connection, please see the Support Center article link below first.
We have directions to specific email clients below but you may use any client you wish.
If you are able to send an email, your connection is successfully set up.
P.S. Since we are unable to offer support for Proton Mail Bridge, if further help is needed, we recommend reaching out directly to Proton Mail Support for guidance on setting up and using the Proton Mail Bridge.
Please let us know what happens and we hope you have a nice day.
And this solution was hard for me to, something about trying to use that Bridge was not working for me. Then I came across this….

Import and export emails
The Proton Mail Export Tool is available for everyone. It helps you export decrypted emails from your Proton Mail account to your device. You can then view the messages or import them into another email account ( I created a Thunderbird acc. just for this, as StartMail works with Thunderbird for this…) or email client. This article will guide you through the process of using this tool.

What a couple of days it has been, and I still had to get help, but when my friend got here it was like 3 mins. and proton mails were flying into StartMail….
So just if anyone is thinking of moving from Proton Mail to StartMail, it’s not quite as easy as leaving gmail or a few others, BUT it CAN be done….Thanks @TROYPOINT for the StartMail review, it’s what got me headed in this direction in the first place, even tho it wasn’t as easy
as i would have liked
