hen using EZ Maintenance add on , would love to set my best buffer size for most efficient kodi viewing. I knew how long time ago, but forgot. Can somebody give me a quik how to ? Pleez and Sank U
From my studies I found one person that recommended max buffer size should be 1/3 of available memory. So if you have 300 MBs of free mem, then max buffer should be 100. I donât use Kodi but I was curious about the buffer size, but I canât verify the accuracy of their settings.
Remind me and Iâll dig into mine. Itâs been a while. I used the crew wizard to change mine.
I will tell you though if you setup your addons to play cached torrents only, use real debrid, and have reliable internet speeds, the buffer size wonât matter much.
Alright, first things first. When using Kodi make sure you kill all background apps that you donât need running. If you are going to tweak the buffer settings I would make sure you have nothing else running when you do it.
If you use real debrid or another multihoster then you want to set up your addons to play cached torrents only. If you do this, you probably donât even need to mess with your buffer settings to be honest. As long as your internet connection is solid and the server connection on the other end is solid, you are streaming that file directly from one source. If you donât use cached torrents then real debrid is literally trying to piece together the file from multiple hosters before it gets streamed to you. This is why you might get a message that says âdownloadingâ and youâll have a delay before anything starts playing. With cached torrents it starts playing right away. And itâs only been on rare occasions when I get buffering using cached torrents. Usually itâs because the file Iâm streaming is massive (like 80GB+) and the connection is actually too slow on the server side.
If you do decide to change your settings youâll need to use a wizard. I like to use the crew wizard. Go into the maintenance section.
The layout of the wizard is weird. Itâs a tree structured directory. Every time you click on a heading it will expand to show what is contained in that section, but the screen usually shoots back up to the top and you have to scroll back to where you were.
Under the auto clean section in maintenance, make sure auto clean on startup is enabled. Set it up to clear cache, packages, and thumbnails on startup. Include video cache in the clearing of cache for all addons.
Now go to the system tweaks and fixes section in the maintenance menu. Go to advanced settings. Then open the advanced settings xml file. The crew does a good job of simplifying things on this screen. Your video cache size should never be more than 1/3 of your total available memory. At the end of this section in purple it does the calculation for you and tells you what size a third of your available memory is. Itâs recommended that you take off an extra 10% from that value. Again, the crew will automatically calculate this and tell you on the slider what the recommended size is for your device. It is not a one size fits all thing. In all 4 sections on this screen I would use what is recommended. Then go down to the bottom and hit write file. Force close Kodi then reopen.
One last thing. I recommend adding the ability to force close Kodi from within the app instead of having to go back to your home screen and open an app killer to do it. You can download a separate addon to do this if you wish. Or there is a force close option within the crew wizard that you can mark as a favorite so it will show up in your favorites section on the Kodi home screen. Go into the misc maintenance section of the crew wizard and you will find force close in there. Long press on it to add to your favorites. On my own device, I use a skin for Kodi that allows me to change the power down settings in the menu. I changed the regular power button in Kodi to do a force close instead of regular. Just make sure you donât have anything updating or anything when you close Kodi this way or it will be interrupted.
Thanks so very much. Appreciate the detail. I think Iâm gonna go with the old addage, if it aint broke, donât fix it. I do RD, and only cached torrents, I-speed is solid. So letâs leave it alone. Just me always trying to make a good thing better. Thanks once again
You should probably still use the wizard to setup the auto clear settings on startup though. Itâll free up memory.
