Counterfeit Onn, Fire TV, and Other Devices are Spreading

Originally published at: Counterfeit Onn, Fire TV, and Other Devices are Spreading

Counterfeit Onn, Fire TV, and Xiaomi streaming devices are slipping past Walmart and Amazon and are becoming harder to spot. Knockoff devices from Alibaba and AliExpress are nothing new, but the latest wave is different. The packaging, hardware, and on-screen interface are close enough to real Android TV/Google TV devices that buyers are getting fooled…

please explain how this happens…

are ppl purchasing these items from secondary/outside vendors rather than purchases through the authenticated companies…or is Walmart and Amazon being sold counterfeit merchandise and passing it on to their consumers?

Hi jayjohn, welcome to the Insider!

Amazon and Walmart utilize secondary seller for a lot of products. So the products from these sellers is not sold directly by Amazon and Walmart. In fact, in most cases the product is never handled by either of these retailers. Which opens the door to many nefarious sellers.

I got 6 ONN 4K Pro boxes. I need to open each one and look really close. All the boxes are not sealed shut.

I’m betting that if you bought them at a Walmart store, that they would be fine.

Thank you. I bought them on Walmart.com. I never saw them on the shelves.

They are only a problem if they are inferior, and Amazon etc are only third party sellers. If the goods receive good feed back; they can be a bargain, although one has to careful of fake reviews.

Hello,

I searched, but can’t find the thread on how to spot the fake onn streaming boxes. I had one delivered, but it was not sealed, but I can’t find the thread on how to spot the fake ones. If anyone can find it, I’d appreciate it

Thanks!

Where did you purchase the ONN from?

Walmart website. Was shipped to me. Thank you for posting that. I couldn’t find it. I appreciate it

@Myiptvaccount, please keep us updated on your findings.

Just set it up and followed those directions. Google Play store was certified, so it’s all good. Thank you for the help!

How can you tell the difference between them?

I seriously doubt this is going to be a big issue if you buy the product from WalMart. In the unlikely event you do get a fake that behaves abnormally/poorly, just return it.

Troy’s article states make sure the Google Play store is certified
