Budget Corner - Crap Apps & Cheap Boxes

Warning: the following treatise contains Sarcasm
Full Disclosure: I am 78 yo Jarhead and not “tech savvy” I’ve even walked up to the TV, pulled knob to turn it on, waited for the tubes to warm up, physically turned dial to the station, manually adjusted the tuner, then adjusted the volume…and thought that B&W picture was wonderous!
I concede your $500 Buzz 6 on your $5,000 TV and $2,000 Surround Sound is superior!
Recently I downloaded crap app doing Cinema HD movies and TV and it played great, add Real Debrid and it was even better. Couldn’'t tell the differemce between that playback and Stremio. Lot of uses for having both? Which begs the question, if Stremio, Kodi, Syncler et.al are so superior “why do they also need Debrid service?”
Just bought $25 AOSP cheap box with IR remote. Imagine my horror when I had to lift my arm and point that remote just to save hundreds of dollar$. You may perfer ONN which I have 2 of, they’re great also.
In Summation: if you’re on fixed income or just frugal, there is lots of ways to do this hobby on the cheap if you’re willing to lift your arm and wait a few seconds for your movie to play for the next 2 hours.

To answer your question, Kodi, Stremio, and Syncler are all just players. Having a Debrid service gives them links to videos to play. Think of it as having a Blu-Ray Disc player but no discs to play. That would be Kodi, Stremio, and Syncler without a Debrid service. Although you might be able to get some links without a debrid service, it would be like getting a copied video disc someone made at home for you to use. All the Debrid services use what is called “Scrapers” to find links for your player to play. That is the best way for me to explain it to you. If anyone else wants to chime in with a better explanation, please do.

That’s fine. For 4$ more, you could get an Onn 4k plus box with a BT remote and a much better user experience. As for Cinema, it’s OK popular movies and TV shows but you’ll get more streams with Stremio. And as for Real Debrid, well, 5 years ago, you could get pretty much anything without it but a lot of those free providers have dried up now.

Hah…. didn’t you get the privilege of running outside to turn the antenna while waiting for pops to say WOAH!! I can’t count how many antenna rotors were wore out or the wires got corroded over the years. And getting a remote (color) tv, then later in stereo was like a crowning achievement!

I also think of Cinema as a player with is own scalpers that work reasonably well without add-ons. I have 2 ONN Pros and like them very much. I use Stremio on all of my streaming devices. Learning about AOSP on a cheap device has been eye opening as my trust in Amazon and Google deteriorates. I am not convinced that Kodi and Stremio scrape RD better than an app like Cinema. RD is RD.
5 years ago CyberFlix and Terrarium were good then disappeared or became crap. You may find it fun and enlightening to revisit some of these type apps. 5 years and many of these apps have made strides to improve performance.
Yes, if I only had one TV, nVidia or ONN would be my choice also; combined with a Roku device or Roku TV.

That’s what I used to think but I get totally different streams on Cinema vs Stremio (Torrentio). I’ve asked here why, but no one has come up with a convincing answer (“they use different scrapers” - but I thought RD was RD)? I don’t necessarily think Stremio’s RD is better than Cinema’s, but they are definitely different.

BigDave, My job was to hold the mirror while dad changed tubes. I also served as the designated holder of the bag when we were at the tube tester at the local Rexal drug store.

I had my son hold a magnifying glass as I cut traces and soldered wires on a sat box’s chip. That chip glitched so fast, I thought I was seeing things.

There was a time when cable/phone/Internet was only $99. Those days are long gone. Now it’s $450 and still going up. If they weren’t so greedy we wouldn’t be doing this

Yup, I just dumped Spectrum TV/internet when it passed $200 a month. Now have Google Fiber for $70 a month and Verizon Cellular for $100 a month. And don’t get me started on Medicare, Medicare Supplement, Medicare Part D………………………………………..

Yeah Tracfone, budget phones, free streaming services, over the air channels, and short-term holiday deals on streaming services to catch up on the goodies we missed. I am 76 so I hear ya’. However, I suspect that 1 factor in all this is the quality of your internet connection & whether the locale is urban or rural. Being in an urban area is fine. I suspect that folks in rural areas might be more apt to need RD in order to get the videos than folks in urban areas?

cool, now that we have a few T-mobile towers in these mountains trac fone might actually be an option.

Unfortunately, as good as Stremio is, now you can’t use Real Debrid on Stremio

I am not sure where your statement comes from. I must have missed something in this thread. Why can you not use RD on Stremio? I just checked and RD is working absolutely fine in Stremio for me. If I missed something, I apologize. But please explain your statement. I looked back in this thread and found nothing associated with your statement.
