Running a VPN on a router allows you to set it and forget it.
No more dealing with VPN applications and you can protect Internet-connected devices that don’t come with VPN apps such as gaming systems and various streaming devices.
If you want to get the best out of running a VPN on a router you must use a fairly powerful router.
Important - other VPNs can be used for this upcoming tutorial as long as they provide an .ovpn certificate for download or instructions on how to setup with Asuswrt-Merlin firmware.
Full tutorial coming next week for this.
Thank you Patrons for your support of TROYPOINT. You guys are the very best!
I so want a this router… its over 500 in cad. Truly a great router. Infact asus is makes good stuff.
Fantastic guide and awesome router choice. My supplied modem does the wifi okay, just not alot of firmware customization and no wifi 6. But it handles bandwidth allocation surprisingly well.
(I saved this to my Amazon cart and canadacomputers cart, my wife saw the price and tripped out) aha.
Thanks @TP-Dracoo yes, this is one of the best out there. Before this, I used the AC1900 which worked OK but when a lot of activity on the network, it wasn’t good. Haven’t had one problem since installing this bad boy. Looking forward to exploring the additional options with Asuswrt-Merlin firmware. In my opinion much better firmware than DD-WRT.
Agreed, i have played with tons of routers in the years and i think asus handles it alot better for consumer use than any other. @TXRon has mentioned this frimware before and looking into it very cool stuff. But apparently im not allowed to spend the money on this. Lol. This offers more control for vpn on routers especially for split tunneling for paid apps too. This is probably the best bet for vpns, but explaining the setup to people isnt my forte so im glad you guys are out here with the tutorials.
Yea you can run into lots of problems if your not sure what your doing tinkering around ive had my share of screw ups. But once you get it its very nice, the Merlin guys are great and its their firmware that led me to asus in the first place. Pretty solid with great support and even tho I can manage mine I hardely ever know what they are talking about in the forum
Will you go over setting up wire guard in you’re tutorial? Im havent been using a VPN because of the slow speeds so wireguard peaked my interest. I have an Asus RT-58U and its been working great and very happy with it, just have to set up a VPN now. I would like to try wireguard with strong VPN. Has anyone had any bad experiences with wireguard?
ProtonVPN uses the wireguard protocol and along with their speed boost tech gives me around 85+ download speeds on a 120 rated network. That where there are about 8 other users.
