Has anybody found how to get the Android System WebView app to update reliably on the Nvidia shield pro?
I keep getting “Can’t install Android System WebView” pop up.
I force stop, clear data and clear cache.
I also reboot the shield.
Still can not get to update it reliably.
Mine updated the last time so it is still current, but in reading the reviews on the Play Store. It seems a lot of folks are having the same issue as you.
One reviewer said by turning off your Auto Update then you can update it. Makes sense to me since I always have Auto Update disabled and I was able to update the app.
Here’s a troubleshoot link and it also mentions the fix I posted above about turning off your Auto Update and then update each app one at a time.
How To Fix Android System WebView Won’t Update [Updated Solutions] – The Droid Guy
I just found if you turn off (disable) Developer Options it will up date.
Then turn Developer Options back on.
Now you have to turn all the Developer Option selections back on.
The ones that you had on before you turned it off.
I’m going to try your way, with auto update turned off.
I’ll let you know how it works out.
Everything is updated now, so I have to wait for new updates to show up.
Yeah, I saw that in one of the remedies, too.
Lol, yeah, I thought about uninstalling and reinstalling, but after reading a bunch of reviews I decided to leave good enough alone.
Anyway, I betcha by turning off auto update will work. Btw, I don’t normally update one at a time. I just look them over and then click Update All.
Bingo! That’s exactly what’s needed to get that updated. Man it was frustrating until I found that out
Which one worked, turning off auto update, or disabling Developer Options
Disabling Developer Options. Did not try the other way
MCat did the same. We are wondering if the turning off auto update works, too. I updated mine some time ago, but I always have auto update turned off.
Apparently, there are a bunch of people with the same issue. I don’t really know what the app does, anyway. lol
Not sure but I’m wondering as well. Disabling is working for me so I’ll stick with it lol
Disabling Developer Options worked today.
Android System WebView lets applications display browser windows in an app instead of transporting the user to another browser .
Yesterday I noticed on my z11 it wouldn’t update and I have auto update turned off but after reading this thread I tried again without changing anything and it updated.
2017 nvidia shield auto update turned off, developer options turned off. this happened to me about six months ago and again yesterday. went to settings-google play store-force stop-clear cache-clear data-reboot web view update installed
Working solution for me.
Installing/updating Google Chrome or Google/Android System WebView responds with “incompatible app”!
If you are using Android 10+ (Q and above), both of these apps are not easy to install/update. Basically, Google messed things up and gave Android users more work to do.
Chrome is no longer used as a WebView implementation in Q+. We’ve moved to a new model for sharing common code between Chrome and WebView (called “Trichrome”) which gives the same benefits of reduced download and install size while having fewer weird special cases and bugs.

The trichrome library is split into 4 variants, just like Google Chrome: Stable, Beta, Dev, Canary.
Download the trichrome library apk variant according to the Chrome/WebView version you have/to the one you want to update to.
Install the apk onto your device.
Try updating your Chrome/WebView with Aurora Store again.
You can download the stable Trichrome library from ApkMirror.
