Watching the content of YOUR CHOICE! There are great discussions here on device preferences, streaming software, APKs, Kodi, Stremio, Syncler etc. I bought my first firestick to cut-the-cord and watch whatever I wanted, economically. Assuming you’re happy with your streaming device, what are you watching? I love and use the downloaded IMDb app and registered it. There was discussion from some of Troypoint’s best contributors today concerning a coming series, Tulsa King, a Crime and Drama series and being on the look-out for good series to watch. I used the IMDb app, search feature>advanced search. Here is my simple screen:
TV Series > 7+ IMDb rating > 10,000+ reviews > Crime & Drama > 2020s decade > English language
This yielded 98 Crime/Drama series to review. I was familiar with many and they were excellent. Some were just not for me.
Doesn’t matter which device you use, it’s purpose is to stream movies, TV, sports etc that you are most interested in watching.
I’m not saying IMDb it’s the only search app, it just works really well for me so that I can use my Android devices for their MOST IMPORTANT JOB - STREAMING CONTENT
IMDb.com. App download, scroll to bottom of home page
Great post. I do think sometimes we forget that the most important goal is to just make sure we all have what we want to watch, when we want to watch it. Lots of us love to fiddle, and get the most powerful, and fastest box, etc, but most of it is usually overkill. It doesn’t take a high dollar, high powered device to run a simple IPTV service and have one main VOD source. My goal since I started, though, has been to have multiple layers of backup sources in case something happens. I think that is where the more memory and more storage comes in. If I watch a movie or show on one app/source, I like to have a plan B,C,D,E…etc, in case that app gets taken off the market (or goes offline temporarily). Trying to find a balance between a simplistic and secure setup is the key to a winning setup.
This is why I was ecstatic when the Max came out and you could integrate a usb drive to put apps on. I keep a Sandisc 3.0 16 GB drive attached. That way I keep about 2.8GB of free space on the Max and backups for all my apps on it.
Miki, I went ahead and pre-ordered new cube BUT seeing the 2G ram makes me think to cancel it as I fear after adding kodi and the apps I use it will buffer. I remember Ron saying laptop BUT had a NIGHTMARE with it due to only having 4G. Afraid I get the Cube and because RAM it buffers?
Also the silk browser, is it slower? Faster? Asking because I can cancel and get the 2019 sheild?
The ram is not causing your buffering issues. I have several boxes with 2g and they stream great. The buffering is either in the network or player settings…imho
Ok Ron. Tks did not want that rabbit hole.
If you’re concerned about your RAM being used up, then before you begin watching a movie or TV series or even a sporting event I would run Fast Task Killer and free up as much Ram as you can. My 4k Max keeps around 1GB of RAM free, and I rarely get buffering. I’m no tech wizard but I figure if 50% of my RAM is free for a single app like TiViMate or Stremio to use then that should be enough.
Player settings…yes! Draco helped me with that before with Syncler.
What about the Silk browser Amazon uses? Read with Kindle it slows…following LOGIC as it is not GOOGLE and Opera I have found faster. Ron any thoughts?
On FireTV OS the silk browser is cloud based and optimized for it. I use nothing else when I need to surf the net on my FireTV OS.
RAM is for multi tasking apps. Most cord cutters use only one application at a time. Use Fast Task Killer. 2G of DDR4 RAM is plenty. Once your app is brought out of storage, RAM has done it’s job. Then your processor (chip) takes over to run the app. Lower powered devices such as the Max will have more issues and buffering than higher end faster chips such as Nvidia Pro and to a lessor degree the Cube.
@Goddess There are several great web browsers you can use on any device. I used Silk until I discovered BRAVE and the way it cut down on the pop ups, especially on sports sites. I hope the new Cube is as good as advertised, but it doesn’t look to be superior to the Nvidia Shield Pro, just trying to compete enough to justify price? Don’t be afraid to venture away from Max and Silk. Lots of good/better stuff our there.
Ok good to know. I thought the apps used the installed browser as the highway.
Yeah I tried Brave before too. And yes for to get away from ADS as a beginner a few years ago was gifted several viruses inside of free
Dave is correct. The Nvidia does have superior specs along with a higher price tag. The Max has very good specs and works perfectly for those wishing to learn it and learn how to effectively stream. I don’t need anything like a game setup, or a server, or anything very fancy, I only stream and with Stremio and TiViMate the 4K Max is perfect. I, personally, don’t like AndroidTV and find it lacking in many regards compared to FireTV, but again that’s a personal choice, and many people use it successfully and enjoy it. It’s a lot like I’m going to the store for a bag of chips, do I Take the Porsche or do I hop into my VW Bug? It’s all personal choice and thank god the choices are varied.
Sorry Goddess but I’m not sure what you mean. Silk is an internet browser and has streaming capabilities. Until I got TiViMate and paid IPTV services I use to use it exclusively to stream live sporting events commercial and popup free.
My first name is Cynthia. Got your point with options and appreciated the comparison. If the Silk browser is not used in the streaming process then it should not matter except if you want to stop the ads as Big Dave mentioned. As long as the 2G is not going to SLOW my groove as BUFFERING I CAN NOT COPE with. A trigger for more than inappropriate language in every language. Trying to avoid grief
Buffering is indeed an issue. Not sure it will ever completely disappear. I have not had any issues with popups or ads in my Silk browser. I prefer it over any other browser. In Android though, I do use Chrome. It takes time to limit Buffering but there are things you can do. Troy has a Buffering guide I believe. Maybe worth a read.
I only stream too. The new cube is close in price to the Shield Pro. The extra cost is an investment for my peace of mind. Over the last few years taught me LOOK CAREFULLY TO NO REGRET which I had with a cheap labtop and and
