As of yesterday I have decided to move away from fire stick and use my onn tv box instead. Amazon has effectively deleted all of my side loaded apps after Amazon made all of them unusable.
Given the many Firestick owners out there, does Amazon believe their new Vega device will generate enough sales from existing owners? Even if owners purchase Vega and later realize they can’t sideload, they’ll simply return the device and move on to other options. There are still many unsold firesticks out there so anyone wishing to purchase a new one, i.e., with sideload functionality will find plenty of pick from.
Unfortunately, there aren’t many of us out there compared to normal Firestick customers. That is why Amazon could care less about cord cutters opinions on the new lack of sideloading; they will still make money from the people that don’t know any better and buy their content.
I gave my last 6 4K Max away recently and you’d have thought I gave the guy a gold bar. Man they were happy. No more in the old dust collecting drawer. Sniff.

Here is the breakdown of how “closed” the system is:

No Android App Support: Vega OS is built on a Linux kernel, not Android Open Source Project (AOSP), meaning standard APK files created for Android are incompatible.

No Easy Sideloading: The traditional, simple method of installing unapproved apps (sideloading) has been removed. The “Unknown Sources” option for allowing third-party apps is completely removed.

Vetting Every App: All available apps must go through the Amazon Appstore to be verified, certified, and managed by Amazon.

Development Restrictions: Sideloading is now technically limited to registered developers and special tools, making it impractical for typical consumers.

New VPKG Format: Applications must be rewritten or rebuilt for Vega OS using a new “.vpkg” format.
Unless you pay for all the services there no need for FireTV any more.
We all new what was coming from Amazon, so no surprise. Hopefully not the same outcome with Google? I’ve been done with firesticks for awhile now. But I did keep 1 older 4K Max Firestick, it’s setup and working fine for now.The rest of the firetv stuff I sent back to Amazon including a couple of older tablets that became slow and useless just like the firesticks! I’m happy for the moment with my BuzzTv P6 (AOSP) box and the first ONN 4k Pro box since it’s release.
I have a Ugoos Sk1 and hate it. You launch and app, start using it, like Bee or Streamio, it either goes back to the homepage or restarts. I you get a movie going fast enough it will play rarely.

Are they also charging for the SDK? If so, then they’re getting to be like Qualcomm with their BREW OS for feature phones.
Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless did not have a free SDK and every BREW app had to be approved both by the cellphone company AND Qualcomm. Thus it was impossible for there to be freeware BREW apps except whatever ones cellphone service providers chose to pay for development then give to their customers. It was also near impossible to extract apps from one phone and copy them to another, especially if the screen resolution was different. Qualcomm’s Nintendo style stranglehold on BREW only led to it being a minor player in phone operating systems, with the vast majority of users never downloading any free apps, let alone paying for any apps.

Their goal is/was to separate “sideloader community” from other users. They are doing it through the hardware. So now to somehow depreciate the older Fire-TV devices, they’ll prolly “time-out” the tech support, and wait for the equipment to die, while making the newer equipment on new OS much more capable. This will prolly require the Jailbreaking community to overcome.
This doesn’t seem to be a very smart business move. Of the millions of people who bought the Firestick specifically for sideloading, I for one have already moved on to alternative boxes. When my existing firesticks quit working that will be it for Amazon.
