I am a patron and an avid reader of TROYPOINT posts. I’ve learnt so much and are grateful for the expertise.
I read about customers of so called illegal IPTV services, around the world, being prosecuted, fined or worse, for using these services.
I hope I’m not being too naive, but if Troypoint, and other knowledgeable experts, find it impossible to distinguish the
difference between them, how are ordinary punters supposed to know which is which.
I’m not a complete idiot and use my common sense, but it is very confusing to many.
I don’t think you have anything to worry about subscribing to an unverified IPTV service. Rarely if ever do you need to be concerned as a subscriber. It’s the IPTV services that are being targeted and the vast majority are the ones that have a web site, discord, and social media presence. If you can find one that is underground, invite only, and no internet presence your good to go.
Yeah I said rarely. If someone is concerned they are going to get busted by subbing to unverified IPTV then they should probably continue to pay huge bills with their cable provider, Youtube TV or Hulu. These raids on end users are few and far between and there is no way Troy or anyone can predict what providers will be targeted. For me I am enjoying paying about $6/month from my IPTV provider vs $80+ from Youtube TV which I did a few years ago. Stream On!
You are lucky to have a very safe and secure, not to mention hidden, supplier. Something many aspire to get but the rare invite only IPTV subs are hard to find, which again is a bonus for you. Others, and beginners in particular, aren’t so lucky.
I think Troy knows which apps are legal and which are not. He just has to cover his rear from a legal standpoint. If you’re getting current movies and series for free, I think you can pretty much assume they are illegal. How you proceed from that point is pretty much up to you.
Agree 100%. It isn’t the payor’s responsibility to determine the legality of any payee’s tv service, nor do they have any legal liability, at least in the US. The consumer is still paying for a service and isn’t making money off it. If Italy has a law that makes this illegal, I’d love to see it. Meanwhile, these greedy litigants can go pound sand.
Yes @PGY it is naive to expect Troy to give legal opinions as to apps accessible in hundreds of countries, all with different laws. In the USA we have an easy method of determining what is legal, hire a lawyer.
Troy would need 100s of lawyers in hundreds of countries and even them he’d have to dispense legal advice without a license, which is definitely a crime.
Take the knowledge from this group to protect yourself and your identity in case you inadvertently find yourself in a suspicious site.
What Are the Laws Surrounding Illegal IPTV?
Different countries have laws regarding IPTV, so the legal ramifications of hosting or using one of these illegitimate services depend on where you live.
The law on illegal IPTV in the United States
The primary law covering copyright infringement in the US was passed in 1998. According to the law, penalties and fines were to be imposed against people who provided copyrighted content without the appropriate license. However, streaming was a loophole in the DMCA, as the terms of the law only applied to downloads.
This loophole was recently closed, however. An extensive COVID relief bill passed in December 2020 included measures that made illegal streaming a felony. Under US law, streaming content via illegal IPTV services can lead to up to 10 years in jail.
However, the new law clarifies its stance on who’s guilty. The Protecting Lawful Streaming Act prosecutes those operating illegal streaming services rather than those using them.
The law on illegal IPTV in Canada
Canada implemented a system in 2015 allowing copyright holders to distribute warning notices to suspected users of illegal IPTVs through their ISP (internet service provider). Until recently, many of these warnings included demands for a cash settlement to avoid prosecution and more significant fines.
However, in 2019, the law on these notices was changed due to widespread criticism stemming from the fact that recipients of these warnings were not obligated to pay the settlements. That led to many Canadians paying fines they didn’t have to. There were also several cases where people wrongly accused of illegal streaming were pressured into paying these fines.
The 2019 changes meant that copyright holders could no longer demand settlement fees in these warnings and could not ask for personal information. Although warnings from copyright holders may no longer require cash, users of illegal IPTVs may leave themselves open to prosecution and even higher fines.
How do you tell if an IPTV service is legal or illegal?
Here are a few factors to consider before making the purchase:
-
Subscription Cost: Most illegal IPTV platforms are free or offer low-cost subscriptions because they don’t pay for the licenses to distribute the content. If an IPTV claims to offer all the premium channels at a price that seems too good to be true, then it is probably illegal.
-
Payment Method: Most illegal IPTV services request payments via cryptocurrencies or bitcoin. These payments are difficult to track and can’t be verified like official payments. Therefore, cryptocurrencies are ideal for illegal IPTV providers.
-
Content Library: Most legal IPTV services offer limited content. Due to licenses and copyright issues, they don’t provide access to everything. So, if your IPTV provider gives you unlimited content, it’s likely illegal.
Thanks to all troypointers for your replies and comments about IPTV services.
It’s certainly a minefield out there and its going to be interesting to see what the future holds.
Thanks, and keep up the good work.
Can you send me a direct message Mark re good options?
Sorry but my service is invite only and for the time being they are not taking on any new subscribers
Ambers 8k strong service has multiple connections and is pretty solid…not at all expensive with a pretty good epg and i don’t think the chinese gov’t cares a darn about US policy on streaming? in fact i think the chinese gov’t encourages it to poke the eye of the USA…just sayin…lol
i have her multiple connection service and it’s been fine for a couple of yrs
I’m one of the Founders. My advice is the same advice Troy gives to us all. You just have a VPN. YOUR VPN is the key, for security of all intellectual property being exchanged. Hint Surfshark. Hope this helps.
Where do we find ambers 8K strong service?
I was told by her they do not support multiple connections. The only one she has that supports multi connections is the Megaott, it supports 3 connections.
