2023 Onn 4k Streaming Box - Wi-Fi captive portal connects

I figure I’d copy one of my replies to a discussion I was having within a different forum thread.

This info is for those who may have struggled with getting connected with captive portals (hotels, brick and mortar stores, hospitals, etc.) and how I eventually got my onn box to handle the redirect successfully.

Read below.

"So, I successfully got my onn box connected to the hotel’s wifi captive portal login this morning. We are traveling this weekend and I brought the Onn and my 4K FS on the trip.

Again, the FS and its silk browser opens the captive portal login just fine like it always has. No struggles there - point for Amazon.

On the Onn - I tried a few browser methods to open the captive portal properly for wifi connect. All failed for me.

  • Browser from Downloader app.
  • Puffin Browser for TV
  • Chrome Browser, sideloaded.

Downloader wouldn’t handle the redirect. Just blank.
Puffin - mostly worthless. Just kept circle loading.
Chrome - impossible to remote navigate.

*Mouse toggle didn’t work for the onn - I suspect it didn’t play nice with the OS version.

I finally got it to connect using Jiopages (which I haven’t been a huge fan of in the past), but at least it navigates with remote and its air cursor decently. You have to make sure you disable popup window blocker in setup and the redirect works properly. If you don’t, then it hangs.

Nonetheless it works fine and I was able to goof around with proper internet connectivity before checking out this morning.

I’ll feel comfortable about bringing the Onn box on my future travels now without bringing a backup FS for those contingency moments.

I’ll copy this post on a new thread in case anyone else didn’t figure it out yet."

Hope this helps. If I’m just late to the game with this solution, my apologies. Initial searches didn’t pull any prior posts regarding this with the new Onn box.

We have a captive portal aka SPLASH PAGE at work to connect to internet. Know from traveling this is a thing that you run into all the time. Glad you mentioned a solution to this. It’s easy to get past this with a laptop. Not so easy with a android/Google tv device.

There’s a thread and posts regarding the possibility of sideloading the Silk browser on an android box.

Nothing conclusive about which apk version may place nice with OS12 on the new Onn box yet.

I’d rather use silk if the choice was there for these captive portal scenarios.

Glad I found this thread. I can confirm that most of my hotel stays in the last year have what I learned is a captive portal. My solution was to call the front desk, and get the IT support phone number for their internet provider (sometimes it takes a while, sometimes they’re used to the request) and in about 10 minutes on the phone, giving them my MAC and IP address, they manually added my ONN to the WiFi just fine. I’ve downloaded JioSphere (new name for JioPages) and turned off the pop-up blocker. I’ll test it in a few weeks, with fingers crossed I can stop calling the IT phone number!
