I am using VLC player on F+. Loads fast, but having defaulting finding subtitles.
I have noticed that also. Sometimes I have to go in to disable subtitles, (last night it was Finnish). There are some that default to English and annoyingly, I can’t get rid of them, since I’m not deaf yet. 
I’ve gone through hell and back to find subtitles because my wife insists on them, especially with British movies and shows with thick accents and slang.
One place I look if I can’t find them through my Kodi links is to go here - Subtitles - download movie and TV Series subtitles
Just sign up for a free account and then you can search for the movie or episode(s) you are looking for and download the files. Then just put the files where your VLC is expecting your subtitles to be. You may have to browse for it when you start to play the file to link to the right file.
