Ireland’s Data Protection Commission has launched an investigation into Sky’s proposed use of personal data to combat illegal IPTV services. The review examines whether the broadcaster’s anti-piracy plans comply with strict European privacy regulations. Sky Ireland is highway robbery. Subscriptions are much higher than in the UK. That, on top of €160 annually to the Dept of Communications for a TV license. When you cancel your subscription (if you’re lucky to actually get through to someone), they block the Irish free channels, which the licence fee pays for. Secondly, most of the channels are already freeview on the Sky basic package. The so called “blockbuster movies” are all old releases, shown adfinitum for days on end. If Sky wants to win the alleged 400,000 dodgy customers, then they need to drop their prices, give existing customers the cut price deals that apply to New Customers and stop with the rubbish programming.
I’ve no doubt the communications regulator will now to the pressure from Sky…it is Ireland after all…the little fish always suffer! Rant over.
