I do not game. I just watch tv I am retired and I need to know which NVIDIA system .I need to try and find to buy I want a good system I have a SAMSUNG TV
I don’t really game either, but I love my Shield Pro. The upscaling is amazing and it’s one of the few devices I’ve found that will output TrueHD audio streams.
I really liked my Shield Pro. Rock solid performance with one weird exception - it would crash when I tried to play video files over my network from my Synology NAS. Returned it and the second one did the same. Don’t have that issue with other devices (Firesticks, Onn 4ks or T95Zs). If you decide to go with the shield, definitely get the pro, not the tube.
Having said that, I see no reason to go with anything other than the latest Onn 4k Pro 2 or 4k Plus (if you can find them).
I really enjoy my Shield Pro. I too do not game so it’s a video max for me and I have yet to find another that is all-around better than this one. That said, I am impressed with the Apple TV box and it is very good if you want to deal with the captive apps (I use TiviMax on mine). I am more impressed with the new Onn 4K Pro and Plus boxes. They have great processors and video. If you like to record the Pro has 32gb total storage and they include a USB3.0 port for memory expansion for less than a third the cost of the Shield Pro. There have been rumors about an upgraded Shield box but I have yet to see anything.
I also have 2 Shields on my two large LG OLED TV’s - and they have pretty much proven to be excellent streaming devices. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend. But on a few other TV’s as well as something I travel with, I’ve also become a fan of the ONN 4k device sold at Walmart, for a fraction of the cost of the Shield. For what it’s worth.
I have a nVidia Shield and it is great for streaming and gaming. If you want to save around $ 150, though, I highly recommend the ONN Pro, which is available at Walmart. I’ve always said, if you’re only going to stream and you aren’t a gamer, save your money and go with the ONN Pro. I have both, and performance wise for streaming, you can’t tell the difference. Buying a Shield would be overkill, if you only want a box for streaming. JMHO.
I had a 2019 Shield Pro for years and sold it to another insider as it was still an amazing piece of tech. If you’re heavily into Watching Videos and Series then you can’t go wrong with the Shield Pro. The availability of settings for configuration is amazing and why I loved it so much. That combined with the developer options is a winning combination. Don’t forget the Samsung TV’s are Tizen OS and they don’t do Dolby Vision. The top of the line picture a new Samsung can handle is an HDR 10+ so in your settings you can focus on that. My shield lasted me 3 yrs before I moved on and it is still going. Nvidia does regular updates for it to this day. A very excellent investment in a lasting streamer IMHO.
I should note here that I am not a fan of Onn. Had one for a week, then destroyed it.
Hi there, I have a Shield Pro also and won’t trade it for the world , with that said , I think you would be happy with the Onn Pro , it’s cheaper and works really well, but there are some questions I have, #1 do you have a stereo system? a sound bar? or just TV sound? These are important to me. Hope I helped you a little.
Thank you
I ran my ONN Pro through my sound bar and it was stereo. For some more advanced sound systems, it may not do what some are looking for.
Here’s what it can and can’t do.
The ONN Pro does support:
Stereo PCM
Dolby Digital / Dolby Digital+
Dolby Atmos (streaming version via DD+) ,
It does NOT fully support some advanced lossless home theater formats like:
Dolby TrueHD passthrough
DTS:X passthrough
Finally! Some one else who dislikes the Onn. I think this website should be renamed Onn instead of Troypoint! ![]()
I have tried them all I like Formular but mine is an older one and it works really well with systems oh sh## I forgot the name but it looks like this 42:35:66 :. if not using a mag system, n fun. I use the shield pro and this is my second one as the first shorted out from lightming, I als have a shield likte but it not good for lots of apps. I have 2 ONN’s pro and basic and they are great for the price. My first Shild pro came with one game padel, the second did not. Onn pro is good but for the price, you can’t beat it.
This was all about money for me
I have 2 Z11 formulizers and way better memory than the nvidia which I also have!
I have Nvidia Pro, ONN box and fire sticks. For me the Nvidia is essential but that is because I can access ITVX and BBC iPlayer which I can’t do with fire stick or ONN.
Maybe with so many people liking ONN, that might mean it’s a good product! It might not be for everyone, but, numbers talk! ![]()
They like it’s inexpensive. Money, or lack of it for many, drives sales, especially if it isn’t a product that is actually needed and you can barely afford rent or food.
Which Nvidia system? There are literally hundreds of streaming systems out there besides one’s made by Nvidia.
The ONN is popular because it’s a great Box at a great price and satisfies the streaming needs for the majority of people here (me included). Now there are people like @Miki that love to tinker with advanced features that higher end, higher priced boxes offer so the ONN is not for them.
That’s the beauty of this hobby there are many choices and a choice for everyone.
Except the Firestick. They SUCK ![]()
I’m in the fortunate position that I could afford these super expensive superboxes, if I wished. I probably won’t get any of the high end Android TV boxes until and unless Google screws around with sideloading and start blocking apps on its Google TV boxes. Until then I have several Onn devices that work just fine for me. I did buy an nVidia Shield last year and really liked it. However, it had one fatal flaw that couldn’t be resolved by nVidia or by returning and replacing it - it would crash after a couple minutes when playing files over my network from my NAS.
So for now, it’s the Onn devices for me. I had used Firestick for over 10 years until they signed their death warrant last year!
I have the NVIDIA pro and love it. Stopped using Fire TV. Planon getting a second one my sewing room and link the so I can still stream apk without having to re-side load all the apps
