My IP being blocked?

So I open up Kodi as I do everyday. Select the show I want to watch. Choose a stream. And nothing. Ok, so I try a different addon. Same thing. All I get is a failed to play error message. So I restart Kodi. Same. I restart my tablet. Same. I forced an update to Kodi. Same. I tried Stremio. Same. I tried YouTube. It worked. Just for the heck of it I tried turning on my VPN. Kodi worked like a charm. Next day I tried Kodi without VPN. Wouldn’t work. VPN on, no problem.

So something is blocking my IP? Is my ISP blocking certain domains? Curious if anyone has any experience with this type of thing.

sounds like the isp is monitoring your connections and blocking what they feel like. They will tell you they dont do that but they lie. Its not really common unless they see you dowloading bunches. Another possibility is a dns filter either browser based or router based. With the vpn on you aquire a new dns provided by the vpn, likewise a browser has its own offering for dns choices. Basically use the vpn to hide your traffic. If you dont want to use a vpn check your DNS settings. Good Day.

Maybe.
Check if your ISP is blocking sites that could be harmful.
It’s normally a setting you can turn off.

In UK, every provider has its own name for content filtering, and the choice of settings varies.

This is Network-level web filters which are enforced by default.
Unlike software that blocks access to one device, filters are applied to every device connected to your home Wi-Fi. So even if your kid brings a friend over with their own tablet or laptop, they’ll be protected.

You don’t need to install additional software. All devices are protected, including internet access through games consoles and Smart TVs.

@TXRon i sent them an email asking if they had changed their policies and if they had to send me a copy of the new policy and list of blocked domains. They opened a service ticket and said they were working on it. Today I got an email saying they hoped that they had resolved my problem. And wouldn’t you know it everything is back to normal. My streams are no longer being blocked.

I didn’t make any changes so it must have been my ISP. Now was it an error on their part or deliberate I’ll never know. But I think I’ll make it a habit to turn on my VPN now.

Definately not a conspiracy then. Seems like it was indeed a problem on your ISPs end. Go figure. I guess some need to be a little more sympathetic and understanding. Good on you for pursuing it. Enjoy.

Glad you got it figured out. Many isp’s will block not just ips but complete blocks of ips if they deem them malicious (like MikeN suggested). And yes with the vpn on all your isp can do is guess.:+1:

It’s usually just your ISP’s DNS filtering domains. Might be a newly created domain, etc. Use Cloudflare, Google, or Quad9 DNS instead of your ISP DNS and you will probably solve your issue of the ISP “blocking”.
