My 4K Pro gives me connection issues. I use it wired to the router because it is 3 feet away. I can be watching something and it will start to buffer and freeze, I check speed with Analiti and Internet Speed Test apps and at time it is down to 2-5mbps and I have seen lower. At times the speed test apps will say no connection. If I restart the Onn box it is back to over 100mbps. I have tried 5 different Gig adapters and none have performed well, the port on the box works better.
So I am thinking about replacing it with an SK1 or open to opinions. It seems to be a tried and true device from what I have read. Not sure about the difference in usage between Android OS and the Google TV of the Onn.
Just use the Wi-Fi. I use a Fire Cube 3rd Gen since it was released in 2019 and have had no issues at all. I use over the air WiFi only. I have a Deco mesh net router and consistently max out my 400 mbps on all my devices. The Onn devices have pretty good Wi-Fi antennas. Try it.
Do you have a Static IP in your wifi settings? I ask, because I had a similar issue to yours after updating my 4K Pro to Android 14. I eventually traced the problem: for some unknown reason, the update changed the IP address of my 4K Pro, and so the IP address that I had previously set in the Static IP wifi setting no longer matched the new, updated IP address of the box. That’s why the connection keeps slowing down or dropping - the 4K Pro’s new IP is no longer allowing the box to “talk" to your router.
If you have previously set a Static IP address in your wifi settings, check to see if your 4K Pro’s IP address is the same as before the Android 14 update. Here’s how: go to wifi settings, click on your network. Note the IP address of the box (192.168. * . *). Scroll down to and click IP settings. Click Static. Fill in the same IP address as you just noted above. Leave the rest of your settings the same and save your new Static IP. Reboot. Hope this helps.
ONN 4K Pro’s built-in Ethernet port is limited to 100mbps, which is often slower than Wi-Fi, and this limitation has been exacerbated by a recent update that has also broken the popular workaround of using a USB-C to Ethernet adapter.
As per Harold 1965 advice - try connecting via wifi
I appreciate all the advice I will look at it further. A few thoughts, everyone seems to be focused on Wifi when I do not use it, I will try it, but I like the wired connection because of proximity to the router.
100mbps through the ethernet should be more than adequate, if it did not drop off to 2mbps at times. I would have no issues if it stayed in the 100 area.
I did look at settings for the IP address but seeing as how it is connected with a wire there is no way to check the IP address in the wifi settings unless I unplug the ethernet and then well I am back to where I was.
I have to leave for a while but will investigate and try the wifi when I get home.
Do you have any other devices in your house? My Onn 4k Pro is doing the same thing, but so are my firesticks that I have in my bedrooms.. I have had the internet company out here a couple times, but Im still having problems…I have hardwired mine in and it does it on wifi and when its hardwired…I know mine is internet dropping so it might be something to check also….
Came home and unplugged the ethernet cable because it won’t use wifi if it is plugged in.
Restarted the box, Checked some speeds.
Analiti:
VPN Off Down 154 Up 112
VPN On Down 54 Up 50
Internet Speed Test app:
VPN Off Down 454 Up 120
VPN On Down 150 Up 154
Ethernet cable
Analiti:
VPN Off Down 98 Up112
VPN On Down 105 Up 121
Internet Speed Test app:
VPN Off Down 458 Up 120
VPN On Down 190 Up 152
I will say I do not understand the discrepancies between the two apps, nor how they will show numbers over 100 in a 100m port. But with the VPN on I get better speed through the wired connection than I do Wifi. I have Xfinity 1000m service and they show 1200m to the gateway, it must scrub a lot because I have gotten no more than 550ish from any wired or wifi tests I have done.
The other thing is there is a Roku Ultra right beside the Onn and it has never been connected using wifi, only ethernet since I replaced the last one, maybe 4 years ago. Have never had an issue with it. I have swapped ethernet cables between the two when the Onn gave me issues and the Roku ran as normal, so it is in the hardware or software of the Onn box.
Hi everyone, just a quick idea, it seems to me these Android TV boxes do not clear their garbage. What works for me is a fresh restart every day. This should clean out buffers and run all day without speed dropping, causing problems such as buffering. Just saying.
But the app killer closes all apps hat are running in the background. I’ve have seen as many 10 at a time it kills and has an immediate results on my speeds too.
