Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Your username is one of my favorite Cheech & Chong songs ever ![]()
I have used home automation for almost a decade. I already have 7 sources for home assistant I see no need but if others want it ok
We often have power outages as well. I bought a couple of these cheap UPS devices advertised for security cameras. Use them for my modem and router and they keep me online for hours.
The techie in me was unable to resist being able to control my lights with my phone so I jumped in early. However today I find myself with multiple security cameras and smart switches that all want their own apps, some starting to demand subscriptions. Iād love to find one app to control all devices regardless of manufacturer.
Iām all for it!
Iām a techie and I work in the technical field, so Iām pretty decent at getting things to workā¦
My problem is teaching my wife, who has zero technical ability, nor does she want to learn itā¦I have to make things as easy as possible for her to get the blessingā¦lol
That is why the whole TV thing is difficult..,Iām teaching myself and getting results, but, I have to get her on the same page, and Iām not quite there yetā¦
All about the teaching. Repetition, repetition, repetition is the key. Do it once for her and make sure she has a notepad and then she can write down steps. Then let her try, making corrections as you go. Eventually she will have a self made tutorial she can follow. And make sure you use it daily. Eventually she will catch on and be able to complete the task herself. Even Troyās tutorials I have a notepad and write down some key points to follow along. I watch the vid twice, back to back, and then the third time I start the setup, running the vid on my tab while setting up on my Streaming device, pausing frequently and rewinding and replaying parts I donāt quite understand. GL2U.
@Miki. Thatās solid advice. I do the same thing and I even save the pages in a pile somewhere. They come in handy in case I need to repeat a process or forget what mods I have made on a box I am testing. My short term memory is not what it used to be.
Home automation can be helpful around the house. I have been using Samsungās āSmartThingsā for sometime and would be lost without; and my wife as well. But she says I canāt go anywhere because she would be lost, but she is learning.![]()

Iād really like to get off Alexa! I own a Home Assistant Green but havenāt spent the time to set it up.
Iāve decided when i get caught up with the āhoney-doā list, Im going to revisit how to get the home assistant green figured out. Oh and I am the President of the āProcrastination Club of North Americaā (PCNA) or WILL be whenever they get around to setting up my credentials⦠Membership is free after you sign up. Itās ok if you put it off till later, which is a trait we requireā¦
Above my skill set
Cāmon @Mslea ā¦
Getting old and too much automation gives me a headache. I try to stay on top of streaming updates. Lol, thats as much as my brain can take these day.
Yeah, each of those would be my luck ![]()
Started out as curiosity, blossomed into a hobby, now a necessity. Live alone with mobility issues. Helps to turn things on and off remotely. I know there is so much more it can do. I want to dive deeper.

Would be a great addition, Im a heavy HA user and can/will contribute when needed if you decide to cover it!
Iāve had home automation for years. Itās come a long way since IDevices, Alexa and Apple hub for remote control; although, I still am using the original devices from years ago to run my home. Lights, coffee, set and turn off alarm system, unlock doors and garages. Itās automatic now, I just say it. I have set up repetitive things to do at times and/or dates, or at sunup or sun down. Program it to do thing when I leave or return through a GPS fence, like coming home at night, if I break the plane of the GPS fence, lights turn on. Or if leaving, lights Iāve forgotten to turn off, turn off. More stuff that Iāve probably forgotten.
