LOL No I just always thought of these as just text messages not messaging apps. So I couldn’t figure out that it was the exact same thing! 
That’s what threw me off in the first place

I have to disagree. I made the switch a long time ago as well only because I was forced to and I hated it then and I hate it now. Its nowhere near as good let alone better in my experience. I had to get a new phone which is why I had to switch. My old messging app wouldnt work on the new phone but it sucks in my opinion.
I was forced into Google Messages a while back as well, it’s fine. It works. Curious if anyone has ever used a more third-party texting app. I keep seeing these on lists as I do a little research:

Anyone currently use any of these or any other ones to send texts from their cell that they really like?
I attempted a transition 2 weeks ago. Half of my messages were NOT delivered. I was getting upset with folks then found they never rec’d my msgs. Then I tried 3 different apps, the adjustment is a nightmare.
I’m using Chomp right now and I like it. Google Messages doesn’t allow me to select a specific ringtone for my text messages (at least I haven’t figured it out). Chomp lets me do so easily. Also, my hubby and I tried Google Messages a couple of years ago and had issues with group messages. We would reply to a message, but no one else in the group could see it. That’s what made us go back to Samsung messages.
Same issue we had. It showed the message sent on my end, but the person or person(s) it was sent to never received it.

Hi I loved samsung messaging app that’s I ever used. Google should of bought Samsung messenger app or Samsung gave them the rights for Google and then keep Samsung text app the same and then let Google do there improvements and most people would of been happy.
If it’s not broken do t fix it.
Just improve what samsung was unable to do
You can change your ring tone for texts messages for each person.
Go in where your texting app is click on that person in the google text app you see all your messages from each other. The 3 dots on the top right side click on details then that person contact info comes up scroll down you will see notifications click on it then you will have your options.
I have older samsung galaxy phone that is where my is.
All the features are there. It’s just more complex. I will say when I first made the switch from Samsung to Google Messages there was a learning curve. But my reason for switching was the RCS messages and everything you can do with that. Once I got used to it, I would never go back to the Samsung app. So, all I can say is, give it time and see if your opinions change.

I, too had to make the same switch and I feel your pain. But, after70 years, I think I’m pretty flexible now. After all, I’ve made it through vinyl records to eight tracks to cassettes, to CDs, to MP3s. From a Casio LED calculator to DOS to Windows 11. From a corded party line phone to cordless phones, to a Motorola brick cell, to Samsung S23.
One thing I’ve learned is that the only thing that doesn’t change is that things change. You hate the change, you vent over the change, you adapt. And the last thing I ever do is belittle anyone who hates the change. Every single being who lived on this planet has done exactly the same thing with no exception. Even those who scoff at your frustration.
You don’t like the change, you vent, you adapt, and just as you get used to Google Messenger, it will change!
For what it is worth, as tardy as I am in the conversation, I know I never used Samsung messaging and initially used Google Messages, but I eventually swapped it for Textra, and for the past 8-plus years it has served me well. It has a group text feature and supports everything I need, but your mileage may vary. It came in two flavors, and after using it for a while, I purchased the paid version and have had zero complaints to date.
I made the switch from Samsung messages a couple months back, as I kept getting the popup that the switch was coming. I figured I would try and get the learning curve out of the way and still have time to find another app if need be. I agree that Samsung Messages is much better, but managed to duplicate most of my settings as I played around and turned off all the Google spying features I could. The only thing I can’t get rid of is the emoji’s when you highlight a text (I despise emoji’s personally) and I dislike that you can’t hit the microphone icon and speak your text and have the words appear, you have to send a voice recording instead.

Could you share the Google spying features you are referring to? Want to make sure I have turned them off as well.
lol nice… another thing I have learned… if you live long enough you will see things that have changed come back. Such as vinyl records, although I’m not sure if 8 tracks and plaid bell bottoms will ever come back or not lol.
Welcome to the Club. My woes were deeper, because I used Samsung Messages to receive most of my verification codes to access banks etc. Use Claude to guide you through diagnosing the extent of your problem and possible work-arounds. The worse aspect of this is that you have to keep sending texts to yourself, to test whether the fix suggested has worked. Good Luck
