Dolby Vision mkv Playback Issue

I’m still curious about whether or not you’ve been able to play anything with Dolby Vision on the fire stick. Before you go messing with Kodi and VLC I’d want to make sure the device settings are correct and the input on your TV supports it.

@Jayhawks659

As am I, the LG cx supposedly got dolby version support and now plays it, and the 4k max has hdr 10 and 10+ which he has, so i hope so.

I can’t believe how difficult it is to find an HDMI splitter that will allow me to do Dolby Vision to the TV and TrueHD audio through the AVR. I wish there was just an update I could do on the AVR and magically have the passthrough capability for Dolby Vision.

WOOHOO! Finally found a cheap solution for my problem. All it takes is a small firmware upgrade and custom configuration. Dolby Vision + TrueHD here I come!

I haven’t been able to get Dolby vision working yet. Been a mess for me. Lol.

I’m starting from ground zero now. Kodi is deleted from my Firestick.

I downloaded the troypoint app and utilized the rapid app installer to install Kodi 19.3, unlinked and VLC to my Firestick 4k Max.

In Seren, when I see a Dolby vision file, I hold the ok/select button for several seconds and an option screen comes up but I do NOT have any options to choose the media player to play with. I can only play with the Kodi player. Thus the Dolby vision mkv file still has purple and green playback.

How do I set up VLC as an external player for my Kodi on my Firestick?
Or what am I doing wrong?

I’ve got good news and bad news. Both of which are the fact that you were correct. I plugged my shield directly into my TV and changed the video settings to enable Dolby Vision. I then went into the Kodi settings and didn’t see anything different in the display settings. I opened The Crew and checked the add-on settings. Again, no new options to change the display settings. I searched for two different movies that I know have DV and didn’t get any links that said Dolby Vision. I also tried long pressing the select button and didn’t see any option to use an external player. And I don’t think using an external player would make a difference if the add-on isn’t finding sources with Dolby Vision anyway.

I’m going to look into this more. I’m not a fan of Kodi builds, but I think I read somewhere that there is a Kodi build that somehow enabled Dolby Vision in Kodi.

I’m glad you solved that issue, I was going to suggest fiber optic audio then Hdmi for video has hdmi carries both audio and visual and fiber optic audio only does audio.

@parkdj808

I was wrong, the update took out the option to play using an external player, you now have to code it in.

For now I’d avoid dv links in kodi.

Syncler allows for vlc player.

S/PDIF doesn’t support TrueHD audio. And with a normal splitter the source will communicate with the TV or AVR, but not both. The video and the audio output from the splitter have to match. With this splitter it is somehow able to disrupt that communication between devices. So even though my AVR doesn’t support Dolby Vision the signal will still be sent to the TV. And even though the TV doesn’t support TrueHD that signal will still be sent to the AVR.

And again, using VLC is not going to matter if your scrapers are not pulling Dolby Vision sources. You have to see the source in order to play it.

Yes I understand, but he mentioned playing these dolby vision links already so naturally I assumed he is aware that the links need to actually be uploaded into this file format.

Vlc plays them but he wants to use kodi which doesn’t so vlc needs to be used. I’m glad you got the splitter you needed.

I’m going to work on the .xml file onto my box and get a guide going.

Okay after some research kodi does support dv but only one layer not 2 which is why you get the discoloration.

Plex currently supports both layer and you can’t integrate it.

But I’d just stick with using Netflix or Disney or what you where doing originally for dv movies and TV shows

I think I might try out this build. I want to use a fork though so if I hate it I can just switch back.

Kodi 19 fork for dolby vision and hdr using kodi player.

Thanks for the responses. I’ve been able to scrape and pull up Dolby Vision options in Seren and The Crew, just playback issues with purple and green tint. Lot of other people have stuttering issues which I haven’t had.

Lot of people say external players solve it but I’m a newb and hadn’t found clear instructions on adding this code to my Firestick.

This site had some builds that fixed the situation but again I had trouble installing these builds from my mac to my Firestick.

I plugged my shield directly into my TV this morning and tried searching for some DV movies. I couldn’t get any links to show up that said Dolby Vision in the crew. I’m running Kodi 19.3 now. What movies did you search for that you found links?

@parkdj808

I created the code needed to play VLC and mx player in kodi. Also if you are discussing movies and tv shows please pm each other for the content.

You will need a file explore app to copy thi .xml into your kodi install files.

Oh wow!

Where can the code be found at?

I have a mac laptop and I have es file explorer. How do I get this .xml from my Mac to the kodi install files in es file explorer sir?

@Jayhawks659

Pmed you both. Im not sure if it will work, i hope it does this is the code pulled from kodis wiki page on external players. I havent had time to test it my self.

There is a build that plays DV files, its a build built around HDR. Matrix 19 final version.

Well I got one step closer but not there yet. I was able to load the .xml file onto Firestick via es file explorer. Now when I long select a file I get a menu option for “play using” and can choose VLC!
But playback is still purple and green.

If I were to try one of the builds made around dv, how do I load one of those? Do I need to delete my current version of Kodi first? Or can I take that downloaded build file (is it an apk file) and sideload it into the same folder I just put the .xml file in? Thanks!

@parkdj808

That’s strange because the major vlc update now supports dv and hdr.

I read it in the patch notes.

CONFIRMED: That build I linked above is in fact a fork of Kodi 19.0 and Dolby Vision does work on it. I just got the notification in the top right corner of my TV.

Now if I could just get The Crew to label the sources as such. Guess I’ll have to use Seren when I want to find a specific Dolby Vision movie.
