It will happen again soon that I can guarantee…And it NEEDS to popup from time to time because if it does not there will be nobody to say you don’t need one

@MarkxG We have the utmost faith that you will always champion the No VPN side. History certainly proves that. :face_with_spiral_eyes:

It’s a personal choice and there isn’t a right or wrong answer.
They can help and they can hinder.
I have had several and do have one but I don’t constantly use it but I have it when I need it.

welcome

Hi, I not sure about what Troypoint’s view will be about this discussion.
VPN or no VPN?
I took Troypoint view of Surfshark VPN and subscribed to it.
I have not seen Proton VPN in any of Troypoint’s discussions
Seems like he is only centered on Surfshark VPN?

You do understand Troypoint makes a few shekels when you sign up for SurfShark through Troypoint. This is NOT a criticism of Troypoint, it’s a fact.

Personally I think if your going to subscribe to SurfShark you should absolutely do it through Troypoint.

Also Troypoint does do a ranking of VPNs so there is that and I think @Miki does a very good job of promoting Proton all on his own.

I would recommend Proton even though I know for general computing, streaming and using the Internet a VPN isn’t needed.

The reasons? It’s a good product and it is a Swiss organization, most do not realize it is a nonprofit, the Swiss have strong privacy laws and importantly, the Swiss are not part of the 5 eyes.

It is a reasonable question, welcome to the site.

I don’t “Promote” Proton VPN. Rather I try my best to point out that, as you should always use a VPN when connecting to the internet, you can’t go wrong with Proton.
Troy doesn’t advocate for Proton specifically, same as I don’t advocate for SS. Proton has one drawback I don’t like, and that is that it does not have an option to access the full spectrum of settings on Streaming devices, one of which is a kill switch.
Happy Canada day everyone. :canada:

For the yearly price of one and the ability to dodge material no allowed in this country it comes in super handy. On the orher hand trying to get into areas with it on is a pain. No big deal it’s a 50-50 for me

Just a slight correction, if I may.

No, Surfshark VPN is not owned by a Chinese company. It is owned by Nord Security, which is based in Lithuania and also owns NordVPN. Surfshark itself is based in the Netherlands. While it has merged with Nord Security, both companies maintain independent operations

That’s great @JerryJ , I am going to repeat part of what @MarkxG stated about these threads and replies.

But first, I didn’t make any claims about Nord.

Here is the thing about this site software that I don’t care for and it’s nothing to do with the topic , the owner, the users all of which are great that’s why I keep coming back.

First it doesn’t thread conversation like most message boards so it can be hard to follow comments reply’s etc. when you are at the last message you have two options to reply:

First the black arrow at the bottom of the message as an item in a line of action options. That reply generates an email to the original poster of that message that is sent to that user, so in this case @JerryJ replied to (I assume, see last paragraph), where I posted a couple articles that are on topic but not written by me which I thought I made fairly clear

The next reply option is the a little father down, on my device it’s a white arrow in a blue field, this reply post a message to the topic but does not reply to a individual post, so no email unless you use the @(user) which generated a email.

So this post will send email to MarkxG and JerryJ.

I am not complaining to you JerryJ so Don’t take it personally! But I find this happens a lot, you get a message in email, it may be completely out of context to your last post etc

The smart thing to do would be “quote” the thing your replying about but to be honest, I am pretty active and never remember to do that so I can’t expect anyone else too, I going to try though.

A public service announcement by an ordinary human.

And if I may add if you are in dark mode it’s a black arrow in a blue field  @Timwort hit the nail on the head here. I’ve seen so many think they are directly replying to a post with a question and the person never answers them because they don’t receive any notification that someone replied to their post! anyway we roll (stream) on here

You could always go into your notifications setting, in your account, and configure how, when, and how often you get notifications. I almost forgot. Do the same for your e:mails. There are options.

How do you access the settings in Real Debrid to change it to secure?

@Timwort Ah! my bad! I misread your post as you were referring to Proton and not Surfshark. Apologies!!!

Yes, it can be frustrating when replying to specific post when you tab on “reply” of the post that you are replying to. It seems that it is hit or miss for me. That’s why I’ve started using the @ option. Please know that I am not complaining as I appreciate this site, and ALL of the good folks that are here, beyond words.

After you log in you will see a banner at the top. In that banner you should see a link that says ‘Account’. Click on that and then scroll down through all the settings. You should see the Secure radio button.
