Looks like the amazon link is missing now. must have bought them out.
I just bought one of these X88 Pro X5mâs to build up for my daughter. I am impressed overall for itâs speeds although it has same chip basically as the AM9 but neutered to 32 bit processing. Still though gets solid 500âs on Geekbench tests & matches up in speeds for the Ugoos SK4. To Be honest on the SK4 I sunk over 120 bucks out for it & thought it was true 64 bit processing, but itâs NOT! It also has the same Amlogic chip but neutered to 32 bit operating system. If you look at these tests results side by side itâs sad I spent as much as I did for the SK4. I wonât make that mistake again. Also although the operating system on this X88 Pro X5M is Android 14, itâs what I would call stripped down some on itâs settings. Here are the results on both to compareâŠ..
IN SUMMARY>>>
1 - Launcher installed W/Box is very basic, clean but hugely sized icons. I wasnât long in getting rid of it for sure. Installed Projectivy without issue.
2 - The operating system is Android 14, but does NOT look anything at all the same as the AM9âs, very different, but navigable. Not nearly as accessible overall in comparison.
3 - What I believed to be a gyro mouse on the remote is just a snail mouse like our Formuler boxes, but very slow to move. I didnât find any gyro settings in this box.
4 - Although this box does have AI-SR it is more limited, only a low/med/high setting for the AI, AIPQ isnât available. No Dolby Vision either, only HLG & HDR 10+.
5 - I turned of off, but root permission was enabled by default when received. WEIRD!
6 - Under display/screen resolution instead of resolution it has color format.
7 - It has a Hotspot that was enabled for 2.4G band. WHY? Mobile version I believe is the answer here, but this was on by default.
8 - Under more settings it has Amlogic developer options W/off-on toggle for kernel log level config + for debug options. You donât see this in the AM9.
9 - Huge problem the other day. Turned on & no picture, after cable & port changes, unplugging + repowering fixed it. SPOOKY indeed but itâs been fine since.
10 - Running latest 4.7.5 of Aurora Store the search isnât working properly. Will sniff until you select, then nothing. It would not pull search results.
11 - Deleted Aurora Store, then re-installed direct from source - auroraoss.com but still didnât search correctly.
Installed older version 4.6.4 & search is now healed.
12 - Ran in to issues with needing mouse to navigate icons of movies/tv of some apps. Canât scroll down/left right W/Remote on a few of them. Odd problem unexplained.
13 - Livenet app (version 5.0.4) absolutely refused to work, black screen. After checking AM9 it is now a dud on it too.
14 - Last kernel version update was Nov29th/25 with Zero updates available out of the box. Updating may not be often for this box.
15 - Even double VPNâing this box will get about 200mbps solidly of my 300mbps native speed.
16 - I am very happy with the Geekbench test results. Comparing to SK4 it appears to be very equal.
17 - Operating is different like stated, but missing the hardware monitor settings completely really sucks. I like to access these on my AM9.
Bottom line is itâs an excellent choice for a primarily AOSP box (NONE are 100% AOSP), & I am very impressed with the picture quality & the overall workings of this box. It seems to do very well not to hesitate to do anything your trying to do with what this has in itâs guts. Impressive device!
The value price ratio is really high on it. It really has many great features. This should be on someoneâs best budget box list.
I hope to be able to flash mine this week, going to do the Slimbox ATV version to try it. I have been using the x88 as it came other than changing launcher and adding apps. Unplugged it the other day to connect the AM8 I bought here of chillenandy321. Been having Emby issues and wanted to see if changing boxes helped.
@MNBob I surely loved the 64 and change price I paid for it. It does seem a shame though to take a 64 bit CPU & cut it to 32 bit, but it that makes the price low, then it is all good. It does a great job overall!
I agree. Ugoos does this on their X5M as well.
@TROYPOINT I have a question, & I am hoping you or somebody else might know a cure for. I built one of these X88 Pro X5Mâs up for my daughter & sent it to her, then discovered she has a 1080p television. Nowhere in this box is there a framebuffer size setting, so my question is how do you lower the framebuffer size when the box has no setting for it? Me & my daughter just spent a long time on video call trying to fix this problem with no resolve. This needs to be set to 720 so her tv will display properly without going off the screen not fitting correctly, but I am at a brick wall on how to fix this. She can turn down text sizing & it helps some to bring it in to view, but for example in iMPlayer the icons on the left are off the screen. I could not find a way to fix this problem. I donât have another identical one here to comb through. I bought an Ugoos Android 13 TOX4 & it has more than one way to set this to fix it, but there isnât anything in the X88 Pro X5M to set it to enable the entire screen to be properly seen. This reminds me that Ugoos has a far better UI than competitors for sure. Although the AM9/Pro & this box have the same Android 14 operating system they are completely different inside their UIâs. Anyone that has any ideas here or has one of these that can shed some light on this I am all ears! Thanks in advance for any thoughts on this one folks!
You can adjust screen calibration with any Amlogic Android box with the Projectivy app as this has those extra settings.
This was recently discussed regarding the Onn devices but same will work on this device because it has Amlogic CPU.
If you installed the SlimBoxtv ROM onto the device the same type of setting should be under the SlimbBoxtv extra settings/features area. Donât have that device with me right now so canât point to exact location but I do know that feature is available when you flash that ROM.
@TROYPOINT TROYPOINTThank you sir! Much appreciated. My grandson helped her & got it lined up ok. Shame it is lacking in the settings & makes me realize why I love my AM9 so much better. That TOX4 Ugoos box has so much more in settings & it is Android 13. Ugoos has it done right with their UI for sure!
Thank you @TROYPOINT But the box is in Oh. & I am in Fl. I sent it to her after getting it all set up for her. You recommended that it probably wasnât worth the time to put Slimbox in the box if I was using it as AOSP & I did do it AOSP, so I never done that before sending it to her. Now that I know it give us more settings & helps with this issue if I ever do another one I most certainly will put Slimbox in to it. You may have mentioned that prior but I canât recall now. If so I would have thought that wasnât needed. Of course I thought nothing would be missing that is needed, & this proved me to be completely wrong. This is a little side note for you & all who read this but I discovered a new version of Aurora Store that wonât show up anywhere unless you look for it. On their website you can download nightly versions which are in dark mode. Version 4.8.0 is available in the nightly folder. There are a bunch with different dates, same version. I just grabbed the latest one. Works well in testing so far. Aurora Thanks a bunch for your help.
@TROYPOINT Can you do more reviews like these with the budget boxes? The x88pro x5m is a great budget box for just streaming.
This box with this setup (slimboxtv) has the best picture quality with my iptv service than any other box Iâve tried. I first tested it against the ugoos sk1. Nope, x88 prox5m has a better picture. So then I tested it against the ugoos am9 pro and to my surprise the x88 prox5m was better. IMHO if iptv is what you use these boxes for this is the best box out there.
I donât have Slimbox, but I agree the picture is really good on the this box!
Were you worried about any malware not flashing it?
I wasnât worried about it. I donât know anyone personally that has been affected by malware. I do use a vpn however.
I just flashed to slimbox, and this box is quick for just streaming TV and shows. I got the 4GB RAM 64GB storage. The picture is great too, and with projectivy, itâs a great budget box for under 50 bucks. Thanks for the help with this. I will have to order another.
